to share garage space with the 800. If anything, the F800 shows what a huge bargain the Kwak is.

However I think that in 95% of serious bike accidents that would require medical attention. That you usually are no where near your bike, and you are your not able to walk, or maybe even crawl. So IF you needed help you would be SOL. I would think that putting it in your breast pocket would be the smartest thing. That way even if one arm is disabled then the other will be able to reach it. I just say this because I was recently in a terrible motorcycle crash and was unable to move at all, except for my arms. Which I could have used to activate the SPOT if I had needed to. Just some food for thought, I would really hate to hear of someone being injured or even killed because they had SPOT but was unable to get to it when they needed it most. |

I have my SPOT mounted like this as well. Reason being is I use it for more then just an emergency device. It also tracks my progress and I can check in with it. With it in your pocket I didnt find it would locate me as often. Also if it was in your pocket and you wiped out that device is pretty large and may hurt you more. Hard to say what the best spot for the SPOT is, hopefully I will never have to find out. |

At the top of Lippincott Road - a definitive test piece in Death Valley. Devil's Racetrack in background.

![]() I've given this some thought, FooFighter, and here's why I mount mine on the handlebars: The tracking feature is much more important to me than emergency notification. If I'm injured badly enough (spinal injury, etc.), or unconscious, having the Spot in my jacket pocket would be of no value whatsoever. But with tracking enabled, if I don't send an OK signal at the end of the day, S&R should be able to find my last known position. If I had it in my pocket, they wouldn't, because the Spot device has to be oriented with the antenna facing upward for it to send a reliable tracking signal. So I'm much more likely to be rescued in a bad biff if the Spot device is on my bike, IMhO. David

Ok thanks for the info that actually makes a lot of sense. Thanks for letting me know a bit more about how the SPOT works as well!

The GPS receiver used in the SPOT device is among the worst on the market. It lacks sensitivity, good time to first fix, and is not robust relative to motion and foliage. It is very dissappointing as a tracking device. I don't know what they were thinking when they selected the vendor.
A next generation SPOT is rumored to have a mainstream GPS chipset, and performance will improve dramatically. You will be able to put the spot inside a cloth tankbag, your riding jacket (where it belongs), or tailbag without affecting the performance. As it stands now SPOT really struggles to get a fix in any environment which has less than a clear view of the sky.
