My wife actually kind of agreed that I should have a NEW KTM, so I'm in negotiations on an '08 leftover 450xcr-w. It's got a bunch of add-ons too. This is basically it. KTM/FMF pipe, bark busters, skid plate, head/tail light. The suspension on this one remains to be seen but I'm sure it'll be roughly a bazillion times better than the XR650L.

I'm planning on finishing fixing my 400exc this week. We'll see. Oh and my new ice tire set-up is almost done too. I just have to tighten some more nuts down and the new rear tire is done. I'll put up a pic when I'm done.

Anyone want a nice cheap katana?
That's a beautiful bike...I'm jelaous of the bike and your wife's line of thinking. Though I got the feeling from KTMTalk that the '08's were sort of the beta of the XC4 motor and tended to have a number of issues that year. So just be wary. I'm sure I'll get a lot of backlash from every '08 XC4 KTM owner on this site for saying that, but I am going to avoid that year just in case.

Outside of that do you think we can get the XCRW's registered in CT? I thought the titles said "for offroad use only", which messed things up for the later year KTM's. I'd love to go for an XC version if it's possible to register them. Then again, I guess Kreech did it, and with a 2-stroke to boot.

Edit: I put RC4 instead of XC4 for the motor type...doh!

The guy at the dealership said none of the COs have "for off road use only" on it. Mine says "Vehicle type: Motorcycle".
I think '07 was the first year of the new line. The major difference in the new design is the seperate chambers for transmission oil and crankcase oil. The idea behind that is that the clutch is a major contributor to contamination and that oil stays out of the engine's top end / crankshaft.

I'm still sceptical, we'll see what the oil looks like when changed. Sounds like a good idea though.

I'm going to put a few hours on it locally to break it in before I turn it loose in the likes of Pachaug.

The valves are shim under bucket on that new motor not the screw and locknut like on the old RFS motor. An all around better bike though.

Nice looking bike! The RC4 is not bullet proof and has its random problems with piston rings, valve seals, crankcase seals, oil pump cover o-rings, etc

08 was the 1st year, 09 improved, 10 improved further.

Many have no problems with 08, hope you are one of them. Fun factor is awsome, just be aware of it. KTMTALK has tons of info on it along with fixes.

Keeping KTMs for now. Suzuki is offered to forum members for $1500. It's starting on craigslist for $500 more.

Anyone need some speed? It's good for 120ish. Dead stable too. Redlines at 12,000 RPM

Only 10,000 miles
Clean title in hand
Currently registered
Perfect mechanical and cosmetic condition
Stock exhaust
Original paint
Fresh tires this year
Never crashed or rebuilt

I recall that he knew your KTM inside and out before you bought it. That was a good story.

That's pretty cool. Especially the powder coated orange frame one.

I haven't even ridden the new bike yet but it's a lot quieter than the 400. I'm anticipating that (until I uncork it) the older 400 may even have a bit more power. It's good though, I'll enjoy riding a quiet bike that can "haul the mail".
