Day 5, B.C.

Construction Delays, and Tourist Traffic!

This guy had a cool work site hanging over a rushing river. I should have taken photos of the very cute girls working as flaggers in all the construction zones. You don't see that in the US.

Thanks for this shot SanDiegoLand.

Here, you can borrow this one...
(Northern BC, along the ALCAN)

Keep it coming. We did a bunch of bits of your route (opposite direction) last Summer. Fun to see all the fine looking photos!

Day 5, WOW!

We've been considering a family ski trip to Whistler/Blackcomb so I was excited to see the area. Looked a little over-priced and touristy for me.

Once past Whistler the tourist traffic thinned out. The road and views became incredible.

On the road down into Lillooet I had to pass these bikes. The awesome Kawasaki ZX10 should not be ridden by nOObs afraid to lean even a little. This road is a perfect motorcycle road, not intended for 25mph...

The gas stattion in Lillooet has quite a collection of bikes. It's warmer than I could've imagined Canada would be. Almost 90 degrees. I swap into the summer mesh gear here.

Day 5, to Revelstoke

Not only was BC much warmer than I expected, but after Lillooet the landscape became a little dry and brown. Kamloops seemed like a medium-sized american city. The landscape got really green again near Salmon Arm. For some reason I didn't take as many photos the rest of this day. Maybe because the landscape looked alot like what I'm used to.

I had circled Revelstoke on my map as a town with a KOA. I remembered from the KOA website it appeared to be on the west side of town. After passing the town I turned around and went back thinking I had missed another KOA. I asked several locals at a gas station where to find it. I was given directions into a residential area where I find a crappy looking campground with only RVs. Not the KOA. I rode up and down the entire town. I ask other locals with no luck. I call my wife who looks up the KOA location on their website. I followed the confusing directions finding the intersection listed on the website. It was even deeper into the residential areas with only newly built homes in the area. After 30 minutes of riding around town in the heat I give up.

I jump back on the highway and ride east. Just east of town was the largest billboard-sized sign for the HUGE KOA just off the highway. How could the locals not have known where it was located? I had turned around earlier just before the sign came into view.

Anyway, I got a campsite before the office closed and set up camp before dark. Tomorrow will be a big day!

Thumb Day 6, British Columbia and Alberta

Day 6, 518 Miles, Camp to Camp Time 13:05

I get a late start this morning. This KOA has the laundry machines inside the office, which closed shortly after I checked in. I had counted on doing laundry this night. I handwashed my clothes and hung them out to dry overnight. Since it's not Arizona the clothes were still very wet in the morning. I had to wait until the office opened to use the dryer. I get on the road at 9 AM. It's gonna be a great day!

Immediately the scenery is spectacular!

I'm a happy rider today!

Day 6, Canada!

I stop in Golden for gas, breakfast, and a short break.

I see 2 riders parade into the parking lot. At 5 mph one promptly fell over. Did I run across the parking lot to assist? No I grabbed my camera!

Leaving Golden... Bighorns!

Eek Day 6,

The following photos were taken on the Canada 1 from Golden to Lake Louise. No other narrative is appropriate...

I get my National Park pass. I have 16 hours to visit 6 Canadian National Parks. Only 9.80 cdn.

Day 6, ICEFIELDS PARKWAY!

I had removed the Icefields Parkway from my planned route to reduce my total miles, but I had been making good time. Several people along the way told me, Banff was nice... Lake Louise was nice... But don't miss Jasper!
It will add 300 miles, but I can always reduce my route in other areas later right? I'm not sure I made the right choice. Help me out please. Look at the following photos and let me know if I made the right decision.

I find another lake named after my wife. This one is requires a 6km hike. No time today. I must bring my wife here someday for a nice hike.

Did I make the right decision?
Should I continue?
Wanna see more from the Icefields Parkway?

Day 6, Jasper, Alberta

I found these wild beasts being held captive and transported through their own habitat. Sad...

I make it as far north as the town of Jasper. The sun is shining and it's a very warm 85 degrees. I have just enough time to buy a few souvenirs for my family and scarf down a footlong Subway sandwich. There appears to be a booming tourist trade here with one souvenir shop after another.

I must turn around and ride the same 150 miles of the Icefields Parkway again.
