Alright, I finally got SmugMug, but I have to figure it all out, so I'll post the link until I get my shit together. Again, I had a great time, met alot of cool people, drank too much, met more people, drank some more, and talked WAY too much shit! Thanks again to everyone that made everything happen!

A little background on the KTM McGyver Fix

First off thanks to Stonewall for putting this event on. It was a great weekend with endless riding routes to choose from.

On Saturday Bill (sbbillder) on the GS, and Bob (AnySunday) on a 950 SE and I (allengt) on a 950 SE picked out a route on the map with the help of Stonewall. We rode out east to Red Rock Canyon. A couple of us overcooked a couple of corners on the fast route, but since none of it was captured on camera it didn't really happen!

Then we headed north on Yellow Jacket road to Benton Station for a great Breakfast.

Then it was West on Hwy 120 to Sawmill Rd.

We rode up to Wet Meadow.

Then arrived at a great spot that overlooked the whole valley.

Then about a mile later my bike suddenly quit. After the usual kicking the tires and wishing it would fix itself. We determined it wasn't electrical because it would fire for a second and then stop. Then I noticed that when I turned on the key I didn't hear the ticking sound of the fuel pump. So we decided to try to convert it to bypass the fuel pump and gravity flow the fuel to the carbs. Since I didn't have a supply of fittings I first tried the 1/4 inch hose from my aux tank setup. But I couldn't get it to seal. So searching all over the bike for a section of vent hose or anything to use I came across the tire pressure gauge. So I pulled out the insides and had the parts for a fuel line.

And with a hose clamp from another line on the bike we were in business.

As you can tell I was one happy camper.

Thanks to Bill and Bob for their help in troubleshooting and helping with the repairs. It would not have been pretty to try to extract the 950 thru miles of sand.

So we fired it up and we headed up to Red's for the great BBQ. By the way for those of you that are curious there is 2.25 Gal of usable fuel in a 950 SE above the level of the carbs.

So I lay claim the McGyver prize and for any of you KTM 950 owners that haven't changed out your stock fuel pump yet, you have been warned!!

Hey Riverrat!

Is that a new truck and 4wheel Camper? Or the same shell on a new truck? I love that setup.

Allengt,
Great write up of the trip. Bob & I had a lot of fun riding with you. I have to say, I normally take many pic's during our rides, but this trip I was too busy white knuckle riding trying to keep up with you guys. Glad you took some good pics.

I was complaining to my wife today about how difficult it was to be back in civilization and reality, she said "well, you can always plan another trip"....I take that as a unlimited green light to be used at any time .

Good luck with your "marketing" pitch to the head of domestic services for the Western Division of North America.....aka "the wife".

Thank you for the link to the pictures. What a weekend it was with the utter chaos of a front tire repair on the first day and the calm precise surgical approach to the fuel pump repair on the second day. I thought you would have been in aerospace engineering not finance. Both these repairs along the trail will stick with me forever. Hope to ride together soon and keep up the fight for the van.

Thanks again AnySunday

Same camper, modified to fit the new to me (2004.5) truck. I don't mean to brag but the setup is pretty sick. Check out Santa... He bought a new FWC popup camper!

vrago, what happens in the springs stays in the springs

First stop on the way up to wmrs was alabama hills and independence, ca. Checked out a mine and did a little spelunking too. I wish I was here to when the 950 crew came by.

Wed night I free camped up in Mammoth area and arrived at Browns by noon Thursday. Since not too many riders were at the camp I took off by myself to Wheeler Ridge.

yes too be continued

The ride up wheeler is great for the dirtbikers. Excellent views and challenging rocky climbs. To get here you ride to Toms Place.

It is a high mesa like Coyote flats. I didn't see any fish in this little pool.

Friday I hooked up with spafixer, rider914, luv2race and others for a quick ride to Laurel Lakes. Good thing we did because the area was on fire a couple days later.

We followed Rider 914. Most people have to buy mapping software. Not 914. Rider has every California dirt trail waypoint in his head. He really has been everywhere, man.

Spafixer.
