iPhone/iPod touch app for bikers – Greatest Road

Introducing GREATEST ROAD, an app for iPhone and iPod touch that helps motorcyclists find great places to ride based on recommendations and comments from other riders. For about the price of a bandana or a single, good map you get immediate, constantly updated access to the all of the roads and rider comments.

I’ve been working on the app for a few months, and it’s now available from the iTunes app store in most Apple-supported countries.

Full details are at http://greatestroad.com/ , but I’ll fill in a few bits below.

The link to buy is at http://greatestroad.com/GetApp/ (requires iTunes, or you can go there on your iPhone/iPod touch).

Some key elements:

Pop open the app, pick an area you’re interested in, and see a bunch of great roads right on the map. All of these roads have been added by other riders. Tap on any stretch to find out more.

See how other riders have rated a stretch overall and in terms of fun, twistiness, scenery and road surface. Look at a view of the stretch and see its length and surface type. Tap the map to zoom in on the stretch full screen.

Read Comments to find out about the road or discover timely hazards. Add your own Ratings or Comments.

More:
  • Send any stretch to friends with iPhones/iPod touches
  • Email any stretch as a GPX to a Garmin/TomTom gps
  • Complements Google Maps, TomTom, Navigon, Motion-X Drive, etc. This will help you find roads. They will help you ride them.
  • Works with iPhones and iPod touches with iPhone OS 3.0 or higher
If you have any comments or questions, PM me, post here, visit our twitter feed (http://twitter.com/greatestroad) or post on the GreatestRoad.com forums.

I built this app because I wanted to see the good roads on a map. I didn’t want to have to pull from all the gpx files to *pick* a good road, and I was tired of getting directions I couldn’t follow because I hadn’t been in the area before.

I also wanted to get recommendations from other riders, including recent condition reports.

I hope the app scratches an itch for you. I’m looking forward to your feedback, be they kudos or suggestions.

Depends on which part, but on the order of dozens around the North East. The app has only been live for about about a week. It seems that each person is entering 2 to 10 good stretches in their own area. I expect there to be thousands inside of a couple of months (knock on wood).

Since all of the roads are kept in one pool on the server, you automatically get all of the new stretches every time you search, independent of when you bought the app.

Hi Babysteps,

Specifically - yes, it's available in New Zealand. One of my partners is going down to NZ in a month or two, so he'll both add new roads for you and benefit from anything you might want to add. ;-)

Generally, it's available worldwide. Its currently for sale in the below countries. We're limited by two factors: countries that officially have the iPhone, and countries where Google Maps allows us to both see the streets and get a route from a start point to an end point. At the moment the app is in US English only but we are already translating/localizing it for other languages.

As we get more customers in each location, we'll make an extra effort to add a bunch of good roads in those locations.

Greatest Road is now sold in these countries:
Australia
Austria
Canada
Germany
India
Netherlands
New Zealand
Norway
Singapore
South Africa
Spain
Sweden
Switzerland
Taiwan
Thailand
Turkey
United Kingdom
United States
