Sorry no photo, (I can never remember my camera on local rides! Have been by it hundereds of times, and stopped half of those). A great old store that makes really good sandwiches is located at the intersection of Highway 221 and the New River (South Fork) along the Ashe/Allegany county line (in NC). It is on the west side of the river bridge. Wood floors, front porch (falling down), almost no parking lot, but a cool little place to stop and snack.

Somewhere in NC

My favorite, though not old, or abandoned ! On a backroad in a remote area of TN, near KY. An extension cord ran accross the road for power, two school age girls working the store ran accross the road when we pulled up. They rode the school bus 2 hours one way to school, that's 4 hours a day ! They were extremely courteous and humble, and interested in the "outsiders" on motorcycles. "Salt of the earth" that embodied the free spirit and toughness of mountain life.

NC

I have to stop now, since I have probably a hundred of these.

This is as close as I've got to a general store. It's on the west end of the Dragon. First time the missus and I went beyond turn #311 (or whatever the hell it is), we thought we'd just gas up on the west side before we turned back. Beautiful lake. 35F November air, crisp with the scent of pine. Punkin Center kinda snuck up on us around the curve. We had turkey pot pie and hot cider.... oh man. I didn't want to leave.

A few local stores

Abandoned for as long as I can remember....

Wonderful memories here. Checked my first whitetail deer at this store in 1969. I was 6 years old. Mr. Nicholls always had the best german bologna I've ever had. 1/2 inch thick cut, with a slab of colby cheese, and Duke's Sandwich Relish... mmm mmm good!

The "Do Drop Inn" in downtown Ballsville.

West's Store. Very interesting story from the old days when I worked dope.

Yabut if not for the website, I would have never known about this....

"Credit was extended to all who needed it and payments were often made in trade (a chicken for a sack of flour, and so on). If you wander back in the store, you can see the chicken hatch door in the floor. "In the floor?" you may ask. "That seems like an awfully funny place to put a chicken coop." As the story goes, a couple of young boys took a chicken to the Farthing Store, a competing general store just two tenths of a mile down the road, and traded with them for merchandise. Their chicken was duly weighed and put out back in the chicken coop. When the storekeeper wasn't watching, they took their just-bartered chicken back and brought it to the Mast Store to trade it again. Therefore, the hatch at the Mast Store was put beneath the floor and secured from the outside to prevent those individuals who wanted to get more than they bargained for. "

And yeah, it is kinda weird for an old general store to have a website

Very popular stop for bikes on Hwy 181 in Jonas Ridge, NC. Has been there as long as I can remember although they've updated several times over the years. Under new management as of last summer and they now have a website too...http://www.jonasridgeoutfitters.com/

Kinda fudging on this one a bit...
Not exactly of the store but a very popular stop in Shady Valley, TN...also with a website http://www.shadyvalleycountrystore.com/
