Is his fan coming on? My fan comes on a lot when riding slow tight woods. Not enough airflow to keep it cool at low speeds, I guess. The fan will stop working if the bike is dropped on that side and the fan gets pushed up against the radiator.

There is a cooling mod that consists of filling the gap between the radiator shroud and the radiator to force more air through the radiator. Just google KLR Cooling Mod for plenty of info and pics.

I'd check the thermostat on the bike. Does the fan run at all?

Whenever I've had boiling symptoms its been a leak in the system. First check is the radiator cap. -Jason

If the rad is plugged up with mud or bugs... clean it.

KLR cooling system is pretty crude. Not enough cooling at low road speed and too much at high speed, and the temperature jumps all over the place. It can be improved a lot using this guys product:

I've ridden mine in an enduro in the heat of summer at a blistering rate of almost 1.5mph and the fan was on a lot but I never heard the water boiling. I would make sure the fan is working.

None of mine have never boiled either, just lots of fan action when going slow. Something must be amiss on your buddy's bike.
