Some Video

Here is some video I put together of the ride to add a little more fun!

This was all taken on a digital camera, so it's not great, but gets the point across.

Update

I have really been bothered by what happened on this ride. I have been reaching out to everyone I could think of who would know the area.

After talking to someone who just rode up there a few weeks ago (Rich Black) and Jeff Kaiser (the president of the Idaho Falls Trail Machine Association) I finally got some insight.

I appears that Trail 48 that we rode that turned into a beautifully maintained singletrack trail was actually a re-route project most likely. We only rode the section that was partially redone. Had we dropped down into the bottom of that canyon off the hillside we were riding we would have found the trail (and even more creek crossings) and been able to make it out.

Jeff has offered to take us up there and show us around so that we can see how to link those trails in. Hopefully we'll get up there again within the next couple of weeks and figure out how to make it through. If we make it up I'll add some more pics and explain where we went wrong.

Another Update

Got some more info from Jeff Kaiser of the Idaho Falls Trail Machine Association. He went up to check out the area and try and find some of the trails we were looking for.

Here is what he sent me yesterday:

Bryce,
My son willy and I went up into Big Elk mountain and Deadman area in search of trail 157. We ended up finding another trail 041 Little Elk mountain and went down to the road at the headwaters of Bear cr. We then went around to the beginning of 157 and found the trail to the top of Little Elk mtn. The trail is basically non existant and hasn't been riden for years. In fact most all the trails on top of Little and Big Elk mountains have literally disapeared. We too got lost, had to boondock from trail to trail, almost ran out of water and my cr500 ran out of gas 100 feet from the truck. We were up riding for over 8 hours and supposedly half know where the trails are[were]. Gotta love those trail riding adventures! Anyway thought I would report back incase any of your friends want come up and get lost on Big Elk mountain!
Jeff

Anyway, it makes me a feel a bit better that a guy who knows the area well had some troubles too!!

We have single track, but we don't have that much of it that you can go from place to place and camp along it!

That's tops!

Let your wife come and "rescue" you... that's not so tops, wouldn't allow that, I'd walk home first!

Hope to see more of your work!

Oh yeah, one other thing... what's the handgun for? Does it assist with faster tube changes

Very Cool!

I rode some of those same trails 15 years ago, thanks for bringing back memories of that trip. I sort of wondered if all that single track was still legal. Really glad to see that they are.
