..........................Demre itself is a fairly workaday down dedicated to plastic agriculture. İf it thrives in a greenhouse it will thrive in Demre. A bite to eat, with tomatoes, revived the spirit.



Around the 4th century AD a chap called (latterly) St Nicholas (Santa Claus) was the bishop around these parts and had his own church, as you would expect. It still ain't finished



but his statue is! For some reason the town is popular with German tourists.

Riding back home was a treat as the sun went down on Demre,



Adriake,



and beyond.

Temperatures are dropping here on the Med coast, though the sun still shines

The heap of rock and wood in the background needs heating. I know 'cos the wife told me so. The heating bit used to be done by me splitting logs and feeding two woodburning stoves. Being idle by birth I've enlisted a new recruit a.k.a. the Beast



However, the Beast has needs. The main one of which is ensuring he has a full belly.............

.......Now the Beast is pretty undemanding. Not for him the delights of eating Al Fresco or ordering Cordon Bleu. He would rather have a belly full of olive pulp. Better find an olive pressing establishment then. Oh, there's one Where? There, on the left of course.



An establishment where unsuspecting olives are turned from their present state




to a much more satisfactory state



by the application of machinery



to the delight of their harvesters/owners/local co-operative

...........Now, the waste product is what keeps the fire burning in the belly of the Beast



The deal works like this. The locals get their olives pressed for 6 Turkish Lira per kilo, half what you would pay for virgin olive oil at the shops or forfeit 10 per cent of their produce to the press owner for their olives to be pressed. The waste is dried and makes excellent boiler fuel at 50 TL per tonne when wet or 200TL per tonne when dry. Looks like I'll be getting four tonne of wet and drying it myself!..............

Got home, told the Beast he wouldn't be going hungry at which he flared up and warmed the house up and beyond the call of duty. Told the wife and got myself a new job. "Glad you found a press, I've always wanted my own olive oil". Seems like I'll be stripping our trees of olives tomorrow after I've given the Beast his breakfast, of course .

After teaching Kimangao ( http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=527617 ) how to take photos I was presented with three more crazy Germans so İ had to go for a ride, taking my new Panasonic Lumix with me First up was Wolfgang who held his borrowed bike together with sticky black tape
