..........The next day dawned bright, as usual. Andy had recommended a ride so off we went

meeting local folk going about their business

On the way to the national park we stopped to check the map or at least I stopped. Terry knew exactly where he was going. Mehmet, who was tending his orchard, invited us to check his plums (Ooh, er matron)

and apples

Terry had been hankering after some fresh peaches. None were available at the numerous roadside stalls. Plenty in Mehmet's garden though

After a delightful hour or so gossiping and drinking tea we left Mehmet and his two buddies though not before being packed up with apples, plums and peaches. Lovely blokes

..................Realising that we would be pushed to complete Andy's suggested route we decided to go skiing instead, on a volcano.

Unfortunately, only the first lift was in operation. Still, no harm in looking.

closely

There was a half decent service track under the ski lift. I asked the blokey at the bottom of the ski lift if we could ride our bikes up the track. "You're probably old enough and daft enough so crack on!" is what I think he said, in Turkish. Imagine that happening in the Alps. Couldn't be done. Terry the Terrier was off

Lovely ridewith a rewarding view at the end of the track

...................The following morning it was time to move on. For the girlies out there in Advland you'll be relieved to know that Leonardi Dicaprio is alive and well and working as a balloon pilot/hotelier in Cappadocia. His pseudonym is G. His real name is only pronounceable after quaffing half a dozen Efes and chewing on a mouthful of feathers. His gaffe is here
http://www.elyseegoreme.com/ Thanks G for looking after us

Bulgari-yeheh.................

........................Then a couple of days later we pulled up at rtwdoug's place in Idilevo, Bulgaria

which was full of shiny bikes

and pretty flowers

all guarded by Bobby the ferocious kitty

and Harley the fluffmonster A gorgeous dog without a bad bone in her body which is all the more incredible considering her story. The Delightful Debbie and Handy Andy, neighbours of Doug's, rescued her as a puppy from a bunch of gypsies who were trying to drown her in Debbie and Andy's septic tank. An old crone who was part of the group even tried to keep young Harley down the hole with her foot as she desperately tried to scrabble out. That image kept popping into my head when I took her for her morning walk around the village. When it did she always got an extra big hug

Unfortunately that horrible incident seems to have resulted in Harley having an identity crisis. She doesn't think she's a big fluffy black dog. Rather she thinks she's a little fluffy, hard to spot, black, stealthy mouse as she creeps into the dining area looking for tasty morsels. Doug and Polly see her for what she is and show her where the door is

.....................At around noon on the second day the silence was broken by the sound of a Harley blatting through the gates. Doug had just returned from fetching the morning papers from.................Vladivostok Can a Harley make it to Magadan?

Likes to travel light does Doug

As you can imagine Doug and Bobby had a bit of catching up to do after nearly four months apart. "Bobby, buddy, you shoulda seen this cathouse in Batogradskiov that we passed. Wall to wall pus................" "Don't tease Doug or I'll have to eat you!"

..........................Evenings at Doug's mini Horizons Unlimited meeting were spent in good company listening to fellow riders tales

Days were spent sightseeing if you wished to. Dimitry from Moscow and myself hooked up with Stefan, a local Bulgarian, and his mate for a trip to the ancient city of Veliko Tarnovo.

Where a band who perhaps should have been called "Grateful We're Not Yet Dead" were performing. Loudly

The bassist struck an action pose

The lead singer puckered his lips menacingly

Fortunately Jimmy Page was there to keep the show on the road

A huge thanks to Stefan for showing us around

....................Then it was off to see a relic from the communist age

This place was HUGE and in a minute I'll remember the name of the place, hopefully.

..............Nope, it's gone. Maybe I've taken the graffiti too literally

Anyway, this place was built to celebrate communism and much backslapping used to take place on a regular basis. With the collapse of communism the place itself has been left to collapse over time

Now most of that rubble that litters the floor was formerly an integral part of the roof. The rubbish pile is added to daily as gravity overcomes the weak forces tentatively holding concrete and iron in place so you would naturally think that four grown men would at least use their helmets as head protection. Don't kid yourself

Matheus, on the left above, couldn't resist taking his Tenere for a play

.......................The mini meet was attended by lots of fine folk. Unfortunately I didn't get chance to snap them all. Here's jovial Jan and the lovely Tina from Sweden. Jan insists on wearing his pony tail on his chin

Tina's ride. Jan's piece of German heavy engineering is behind

Dimitry from Moscow on his XT660R

with additional fuel tanks

The Polish Chippendales here for 5 days extreme enduro

Karola and Hannes from Austria

Karola is a petite lady but her GS1100 knows who the boss is

Of course there is always some urchin who needs help getting dressed
