Most of the way to the 2008 OCR

Two weeks before I was set to head off for the 2008 OCR I was out riding my bicycle through the mountains when I was hit head on by a woman driving a four wheel drive.
I was heading straight for her for about 60 metres with her completly on the wrong side of the road and an embankment on my left so had no where to go but hit her.
I was doing 55kph and she was probaly doing 75kph. I dare say she was doing something else in the car other than driving?
By the look of the photo I need to do a lot more riding to get rid of my spare tyre!?
This was from collecting her rear vision mirror. Ambo ride to hospital sucking on the green stick and having had two hits of morphine.

Incredibly I broke no bones but just had a lot of deep bruising and cuts and abrasions.
By the way she has since been charged and I have got a very nice cheque from her insurance company for a new bike.
I have also since found out that I need a total knee reconstruction. Rode to Adels Grove and back needing a knee reconstruction!!

The offending vehicle. The dent was made with my knee, ouch.

Could even manage a smile for the police photographer, helped by the morphine. Bloody good stuff that.

At last after lots of planning for the OCR trip we were off. Chappy on the right and Marcus set off for Ballarat at 8 pm to meet up with 4 other riders. Possibly not a good idea for me to be going but had put in too much planning and had been dreaming of the day. So......
At this stage I had no idea I had ruptured my Anterior Cruciate Ligament which holds the knee together. Doctors told me it was just bad bruising!

Overnight stop at Packsaddle was a bit crazy. Howling winds really tested our tents. Great Mixed Grill which was washed down by some nice cold Tooheys Olds.

My only off for the trip happened just South of Milparinka. Came over a slight rise doing about 100 kph and hit a 50 metre stretch of loose stuff. Sent me tank slapping and after about 40 metres down I went. Piss weak BMW crash bar folds back onto the cylinder head and puts a crack in it. Never mind Chief Engineer (RAN retired) Dick came to the rescue fixing it with some Liquid Metal which held for the rest of the trip.

The rest of the guys patiently waited.

On the road out from Tibooburra to Camerons Corner crossing a clay pan.

The wild dog gate at Camerons Corner.

Camerons Corner General Store were you get the best roast beef and salad sandwiches.

Guzzi with a broken ankle at a Santos rig. Santos flew him home to Brisbane on the company jet and are trucking his bike back on a company truck. Good fellas those Santos boys.

Waiting for the rest of the guys while stopping the wild dogs from getting through the gate.

We set camp about 50 kms west of Camerons Corner. Great spot with a good fire and plenty of wood. Huge sky of stars that night just left us in awe.

Finishing the night with a port.

The next morning 3 of us went up the Old Strezlecki Track heading for Innaminka the other 3 went up the Bore Track. My knee was in no fit state to ride too much sand..

One of the many Santos gas rigs we passed along the way.

Innaminka General Store. Bloody good hamburgers here.

Tim in Charlieville Hospital after breaking his leg and collar bone while trying to catch up to us.

Some of the guys at Will's Grave. Top spot to camp but we had to keep going. Got our first real taste of sand riding in to this site. Not great on a fully loaded pig.

These were great roads to ride.

OK were good for that.

Camped on the Walkers Crossing track and woke to a nice frost. Chappy was up early to light the fire.

Further on on Walkers Crossing.

Met up with some guys from Adelaide, apparently we had camped about 10 kms apart.

One of three creek crossings going in to Adels Grove.

Dick was keen to help out with the cattle muster.

Lawn Hill National Park.

David swimming at Adels Grove.

Sunning ourselves on the pontoon.
This is where I turned around because my knee was giving me hell and was so swollen I had began to loose circulation to my foot. It turned out I had ridden this far with a knee that had a ruptured Anterior Cruciate Ligament.

If you look close enough you will see a 2 mt fresh water croc about 100 mt from where we were swimming.

OK. So what did I do? Look up of coarse.

The Pig and the anthills.

Plenty of these blokes willing to race you along the road.

The open cut at Cobar. Gold and Copper.

Plenty of feral goats out here.which used to be a real pest. Now however the Station owners round them up and sell them to a crowd who export them live to the Middle East. Good tucker.

TRim's bike on the side of the road as he was taken off to hospital. Local staion owners were kind enough to take it back to their station
and arrange to send it home.

Tim and his fan club at the Charlieville Hospital.
Broken leg and collarbone but can't wait to get out there and do it again.

Tim leaving the Charlieville Hospital just 2 hours before I got there to visit him!

Bourke and I can't understand why all the shops have roller doors on their windows????

I had to stop and walk back on the bridge to get a photo of this great old bridge.

Longreach and the birthplace of Qantas.

Self portrait. Would love to have made it all the way to Lorella Springs but was in too much pain from the bicycle accident I had before the trip.
Never mind I'm looking forward to Milparinka in 2 years time.
Now come on all you fellas in my group finish this ride report off with photos etc of the rest of the trip.
I met a lot of great people along the way and look forward to doing lots more of this sort of riding in the future.
It's late so goodnight!!!!!!
