1992 R100GS - Progressive shock rubs tire

I recently bought a '92 R100GS with a sidecar, and now I'm in the process of sorting it out.
The sidecar uses the same shock as the bike, the bike has a stocker, the hack has a progressive unit. I switched them over as an experiment last night (the stocker is way to soft, and I'm not a big guy.)

Anyway, the spring on the progressive hits the end of the tire (gripster.)

Anyone else have this problem?
Is there an easy cheap way to fix it and retain the stiffer shock on the bike?

Take a very close look at the shock rod where it goes into the aluminum under the snubber at the bottom there is a groove under the snubber where mine broke.!!!! My Progressive rubbed the tire just before the shock SNAPPED IN HALF!
