Next time take the monkey-bike

Don't let KTM640Dakar haras you too much. Truth is you could have made that trip on the hardtail monkey bike if you had wanted to. I watched the "SPOT" map showing the terrain... looks like you guys were riding superslab the entire way

Photos are always great, but I especially liked the one of the two children with the beaming smiles. Thanks for spreading the goodwill, you "ugly american".

Wow sweet pics. Glad you made it safe, looks like you tested the steed. Can't wait to here about the trip. I look forward to finally riding with you again now that I finally have a bike again. Cheers

The 800 was a good choice. Especially in Guatemala, at lake Atitlan. We were told by locals that the road around the lake was dangerous. The locals take boats to visit the various villages around the lake because of the high incidence of theft on the road.

What we weren't told was that the road was a mixture of sand, rocks and silt. Add to that some serious grades and you have the perfect ingredients for an adventure.

At one point, on a steep hill, we came upon a Pepsi delivery truck who was having trouble making it up the hill. The technique was to put the truck in first gear, floor it, dump the clutch, move about six inches until it stalled. The two helpers would then stack big rocks behind the truck's wheels then start the procedure again.

Thinking we would be there for the next three hours stuck behind the truck, i had the bright idea of walking the bike up (slipping the clutch . . ) past the truck.

My plan didn't work out too well . . The grade was steep and the silt was slippery, i lost my balance and dropped the bike over onto the truck. We were all cracking up and the Pepsi guys helped me to free it from the truck and walk it up far enough to where i could ride it the rest of the way up.

I was sure glad it wasn't a 1200 Adventure.

Next time i'm travelling in style;

Congratulations on the new motorcycle, Matt. Now we need to get Tom set up.

Let's see some pictures of your new KLR.

Different story. Rough roads between Belize and Guatemala, the BMW Vario cases couldn't take it.

The Pepsi truck hardly left a mark.

I am working on Tom everyday and I think I am close. As long as he stops buying guns. Lol
Here are some fun pics.

No I was lucky, bought it like that from Original owner.

Apologies too, I have not introduced myself.
I am not totally new to riding it has just been a few years. My name is Matt and I live around Union Lake. The last few years I was heavy into the off-road scene with my heavily farkled LR3. I was also a big mountain biker. As times have gotten tough I had to let the old girl go, LR3 that is, and my sweet Mt. Bike. I was looking for some way to get back off-road and keep the bike theme. So, Dual-Sport bike it is. I hope to be on a bunch of rides and meet all of you guys. I have been lurking for sometime now and you guys seem like a great bunch.
I hope to do a trip in September around Lake Superior. Any advice is always welcome.

Bruno,

Glad to see you made it back safe and sound. It looks like you had a great trip, can't wait to hear about it over a campfire and some cold ones.

Or is that one of those new-fangled self-contained automatic chain oilers?

Were both of you guys riding 2-up? You damned fools!

That's no fancy chain oiler, Matt. My rear Ohlins failed in Costa Rica.

Warranty????????

Clapped out Vario boxes. You should have kept the Aluminum ones. If they would have fit. And they probably didn't. Man that has to piss you off.

You pay good money for something and it goes south on you.

I heard about your Pespi silt road adventure....buddy. You are right I would have been bumming if I was on a 1200GSA. Except the threat of highway men stealing my money (and life) part, would have kept me on the beach. With a beer.
