Day 6: Tues Sept 9th

Hello All.

Today was another good day.
I awoke at 6:00am and left Aquatop's place before dawn.

I took the secnic route to see Devils Tower NP.

Prairie Dogs?

Then 7 hours of I-90.

There's snow in Yellowstone.

I made it to Montana.

More I-90...

I'm currently in Bozeman MT. visiting my good friend Luke, demi-god of Mystery Ranch Packs.

If you ever need the best backpack made, get one from Mystery Ranch.

If anyone wants the "Virtual Tour" of the Bozeman facility; I've got the "behind the scenes" pictures, and I'd be willing to post them up, but only if anyone is interested. Let me know.

Stats for the day: 483 miles, Moving Avg. 57.2. Moving time 8:27. Stopped 1:04. Total time 9:32.
I averaged 50 MPG!!!

Gotta go. I need BEER!.
More to come....

It's a Golite Hex 3.
It's a simple center pole design, but the pole colapses into 18" sections which fit nicely in the sidecases. Most othet tents use poles that are 22 - 23" - too long for the cases.

Wow. I really need to do this trip myself. Great pics once again, Q.

By the way, James Lindars asked me to post a message for him since he doesn't have an account here:
Respect from James for making the adventure real. There's a beer in the fridge for you when you get back. Safe travels brother.

And now, I'll continue to .

Tell James I say "Hello". I'll be back in VT for the Pumpkin Chuck'n Trebuchet weekend in October, and I'll be sure to drink that beer.

Cheers mate!

Hey Missle Junkie

I don't know if you know this, but there is a Titan II missle museum in AZ, just south of Tucson. I think the town is called Saquarita (probably mispelled). Tour was like $7 bucks, the Titan II is the big boy, you should really go and see it. Pics look great, goodluck on the rest of the trip.

And in about 3 weeks I'll be down in Tucson AZ and I'll be visiting a Titan Complex. The biggest underground hardened structure ever!

Stay tuned.

Day 7: Wed Sept. 10th. Maintenance day...

Hello All.

I'm not going to be on the road today...
I'm still in Bozeman, hanging with the great folks at Mystery Ranch backpacks.

It's 45 degrees here now, cold, windy, overcast, and light snow.
I'm catching up on E-mail, updating Ride Reports, and planning my route for the next couple of weeks.

Gosh, there's so many things I want to see.
Schedule looks like this:
Day 08 - Thurs Sept 11 Bozeman MT, to Glacier NP
Day 09 - Fri Sept 12: Glacier "Highway to the Sun" to Radium Hot springs and soaking in the hot water all afternoon.
Day 10 - Sat Sept 13: Radium Hot springs to Lake Louise and Glacier NP.
Day 11 - Sun Sept 14: Glacier NP to Missoula MT.
Day 12 - Mon Sept 15: Missoula to Livingston MT and an Oil change for the bike.
Day 13 - Tues Sept 16: Livingston MT. Beartooth pass, and Yellowstone.
Day 14 - Wed Sept 17: Yellowstone and Grand Tetons
Day 15 - Thurs Sept 18: Grand Tetons to Craters of the Moon NP.
Day 16 - Fri Sept 19: Craters of the Moon, Logan Canyon Scenic Byway, to Bear Lake.
Day 17 - Sat Sept 20: Bear Lake, Flaming Gorge, and Dinosaur NP.
Day 18 - Sun Sept 21: Dinosaur NP to Edward's CO. to visit my Aunt.
Day 19 - Mon Sept 22: Rest and maintenance
Day 20 - Tues Sept 23: BMW of Denver - I've got a faulty fuel sensor...

So it's an ambitious schedule, with most days beig over 6 hours of riding and 450+ miles, but there is lots to see, and I'll be taking lots of pictures to share with you all.

Day 6: Sept 9th. Evening in Livingston MT.

Hello again.

Last night was my first night "on the town" since I've been on the road.
My friends at Mystery Ranch took me out in the town of Livingston MT.
It's a quaint wastern town based around a rail line.

Before dinner I checked the bike, It's a bug smeared mess. Lots of grasshoppers that make big green splats on ones windscreen and visor.

We walked to dinner.

The sky was changing and looking treatening. (Today it's snowing.)

Here's a cool truck - Montana style.

More soon.

Ride on Questor! It doesn't look like you have much time for hanging out, but there are some ADV hooligans here in Helena. You are going to be passing right through here, a couple of us are even good at wrenching if'n you need a hand. Keep us in mind if you need anything. No matter where you're at in the state, your not too far off. It sounds like you have some good connections in Bozeman. Mystery Ranch is the old Dana Designs crue. Good stuff!

Maybe just call ahead or look online to check the weather and road report for Glacier. They are going to close the Going-to-the-Sun after this weekend, I believe. Going to get after the construction, so you can only go so far on it. My suggestion is to go in from the east to west on G-t-t-S road. Let us know if you need any other tips or help. Good rode report so far! I'll be looking out for you on the hwy. I'll be sure to give you a salute if I see ya.

RIGHT ON!

It looks like I'll be passing through Hellena tomorrow, on my way to Glacier.
I WILL get to the Going to the Sun road before they close it. I am aware of the construction. In fact it was one of the major reasons I rushed cross country so quickly.
After Glacier, I'll go up and see Banff and Lake Louise.
Then I head south...

I do need an oil change.
I'm planning on picking up two more filters and some oil from Missoula BMW, and doing the change myself back in Livingston.

However... since you so kindly offered, I could easilly alter my course off I-90 west, and head over to you via Avon, MT.

This would be the afternoon / evening of Monday Sept 15th.

What do you think? Can I use your garage?

That would be really fantastic.

Day 8: Thurs Sept. 11th

Hello again.

Today I went from Bozeman MT to Kila Mt., just SW of Glacier NP.
I was awake at 6:00am and was on the road by 6:30.

The crazy part was the freezing fog in the morning.

Burr...

I took I-90 Rt 12 to Rt 141 to Rt 200 to Rt 83. Rt 83 was great!

I got a coffee at the Starbucks in Helena, MT. and went over some great mountain passes. It was nice to carve tight 60 MPH corners.

I stopped at a campground in Avando by the river and dried out my camping gear.

Rt 83 to Swan Lake was very nice.

Headed to Glacier NP.

I had lunch at the Rocky Mountian Road House / Casino.
The locals were freindly, and had some recomendations for routes in Colorado. I'll try to splice them into my route.

Above the bar I saw this. It looked familiar.

After lunch I found a nice spot by the Flathead River and took a swim. I needed it. The temperatures had risen to 70 degrees.

Then back roads to stay with my ADV host, dblarrow for the night.

Montana has some beautiful country.

Dblarrow has a great place and a fine family. Hearing them playing the piano after dinner was quite pleasant.

Thanks dblarrow. You've got a great spot.

Stats for the day: 294 miles, Moving Average 51.7 Moving time 4:54. Stopped 3:41.

Today was one of those days where I felt calm and relaxed. No stress, and I was happy to be where I was, doing what I was doing.

For me, such peace is uncommon. Perhaps I'm learning to relax...

Tomorrow, Glacier National park, Going to the sun Highway, and an afternoon soaking in the hot springs of Radium Canada.

Life is good.

Nice bumping into you at Logan Pass!

Hey Questor,

It was nice bumping into you and chatting for a few minutes at Logan Pass Friday in GNP....great day for riding! I wish I could have joined you for your ride up to Banff. Hope you had a good ride...as you now know, September in NW Montana is the best time of the year and some of the best scenery anywhere.

Enjoy the rest of your trip!
