Gravelly Ride Saturday: Pics.

Nice pics Charles, here are mine from my Saturday jaunt out of Ennis.

View from Beginning of Call Rd back to Ennis. It was about 44 leaving Ennis, and super windy. Brr!

Road furniture

It was super cloudy/foggy and 36 degrees for about an hour. ugh.

Then it broke and I had good sun. View into Ruby Valley.

Clouds were rolling over the mtns from the east.

Black Butte Mtn.

Crapload of sheep were sleeping in road.

Found FR209 goes down to Centennial Valley.

Centennial Valley view.

The road home

Ruby Resevoir.

Ennis to Ennis was 178 miles. Down Gravelly Rd and back up Ruby. Best ride I have done since doing Beartooth I think. Anyone wants to do this I will go again in a second.

Alright, lets ride or drink. Just did that Centennial Valley also, that ride started Trail Creek to Paradise Valley through the park to the Beartooth Pass, Red Lodge, low road to Cody, back through the park to West, got off US 20 at Henry's Lake, then the gravel past Red Rocks NWR, then north down the Ruby Valley, Alder, Ennis, home - 2 nights out - 2 up on the KLR. Didn't want that ride to end.

Mr. Cob's Visit to Bozeman

I will be Mr. Cob's initial contact here in Bozeman. His ETA is between 4 and 6 pm. Today's route is taking him over Beartooth Pass to Red Lodge, Hwy 78 to Columbus, and then i-90 (Gasp) to Bozeman. If I can make contact and confirm a rendezvous point, I would like to guide him in from Livingston/Hwy89/Springdale or some such along his route.

More news as it developes.

intro

Great to see so many locals here. Will certainly be up for some rides soon, new Wees for wife and I in the garage and looking to get out. Of course, she has to learn to ride first, I figure that should take a day or so. Also, duck season starts, pheasant, and fall fishing.

Beer is good too.

New old guy, not quite Bozo

New to this gig, V Strom 650 or BMW 650 Dakar. Usually ride alone. Know how to drink beer, know the Centennials, Gravellys , Greys Wyo. and the old Relamation Road pretty well. Just a hello to folks within spitting distance. To travellers through Yellowstone that might need a hand, I have a pretty nice shop. Lathe, mills, and sheet fab capabilities. After five to the right people the charge is usually on a fluid scale.

Right! Beer and brats at my house this Thursday Oct 2 6:00.

Short notice, tough noogies, going out of town next week, don't want to wait.

You can bring beer if you'd like, but I'll have some.

Who's in.

Today's paper

I have no words to share that are positive about this.

Federal judge recommends motorized restrictions in Gallatin Forest be tightened
By DANIEL PERSON Chronicle Staff WriterSeveral motorized groups seeking to overturn part or all of the Gallatin National Forest Travel Plan hit a snag Monday when Magistrate Judge Jeremiah C. Lynch recommended their claims against National Forest Service be rejected.
The judge also ruled in favor of a coalition of conservation groups that claimed the travel plan allowed too much motorized use in a swath of the forest that includes the Gallatin Crest.
Lynch’s recommendations will go to U.S. District Judge Donald Malloy, who will make a final ruling.
Before the court are three cases brought against the Gallatin by various user groups over a 2006 travel plan that directed what modes of transportation could be used in various portions of the forest.
Three conservation groups argued that the Gallatin violated several acts of Congress by allowing an increase in motorized use in the Hyalite-Porcupine-Buffalo Horn Wilderness Study Area.
Five other groups argued that the travel plan unfairly restricted motorized vehicles in that area.
And three groups, including Citizens for Balanced Use, argued that the travel plan was too restrictive of motorized vehicles across the entire forest.
Monday’s ruling left conservationists jubilant and at least one motorized group disgruntled.
“At CBU, we’re very disappointed by this,” said Kerry White, executive board member of CBU.
White said Lynch’s opinion constituted “making law from the bench.”
“I’m disappointed the courts are ignoring the law,” he said.
Among other things, the court ignored CBU’s contention that the U.S. Forest Service did not heed the group’s public comment when drafting the travel plan, Kerry said. That constituted a violation of environmental protection laws.
“We were basically ignored by the Forest Service,” White said.
Conservation groups said the recommendation was a positive step for a quieter, wilder national forest.
“It’s preliminary, but I think it’s very hopeful for the wild Gallatin Range,” said John Gatchell, conservation director for the Montana Wilderness Association.
Gatchell’s group brought its case against the Forest Service with the Greater Yellowstone Coalition and the Wilderness Society.
In 1977, Congress designated 155,000 acres in the Gallatin National Forest as the Hyalite-Porcupine-Buffalo Horn Wilderness Study Area. Originally, the area was to be analyzed to determine if it should be designated a wilderness area. Since 1977, no decision has been made, but the conservation groups argued in court that law requires the Forest Service to maintain the area’s wilderness character.

However, the Gallatin’s travel plan hurt that character, the groups claimed, because it opened the door for expanded motorized use.
Lynch agreed.
Bob Ekey, regional director of the Wilderness Society, said he was also pleased that Lynch recommended most of the travel plan be upheld.
“The significance here is the bulk of the Gallatin travel plan has been upheld,” he said.
All parties in the lawsuits have 10 days to challenge Lynch’s recommendations. White said CBU did plan to challenge.
Gallatin National Forest representatives did not return call seeking comment on the opinion.
