Skibum Soiree-all the way east rally '09

I would like to ask everyone to please respect the speed limits and your manners in the small communities near and including New Melbourne. People being idiots can seriously impact the lives of residents in the area, myself included. Thank you in advance

Ok, just so everybody knows, I'm on the road to Moncton for AC/DC tomorrow until the 11th of August, and I am not bringing my computer.

Everything for the Soiree is good to go aside from a few small details. There are spaces left to fill, please send your registration via paypal as per the information in post #1.

Everyone who's coming on the boat to Argentia have a look at the ride report from the trail run and think a little about how challenging you want to have your first day. Big bikes will have a little more fun in a couple of sections-but without luggage it should definitely be doable.

Feel free to offer up any questions here and anyone with answers will pop up. If something that needs me specifically Geoff and some others have my phone # and can get hold of me.

See you in a couple of weeks;)

Finally! I've gotten all of the #'s and have figured out the registration fee! To cover all of the fixed costs it will have to be $75 and T-shirts will be extra at $15 each, any colour you want as long as it's back. Both of these will have to be prepaid to my paypal address skibum69@mac.com. I'll keep a running list of people who've paid, don't know yet when the cutoff for t-shirt payment will be.

final dates are for the weekend of August 22/23. It looks like some folks are planning to get the Wednesday ferry from North Sidney to Argentia where they'll be met on Thursday am to ride the railbed spur line to my house. Plenty of places to get back on the pavement along the way. It is also in the works to have a truck show up to carry peoples panniers etc

Ok folks-I need to start getting a little bit of an inkling as to how many people are planning to show up and for what days? Arriving what day? Friday & Saturday nights #'s are very important because it will determine how big a pig we're going to need to feed all those planning on being there for food. Getting a little bit closer I'll post the registration fee and it will be payable via paypal to make it easy. there will be a cutoff date after which you'll be out of luck. We'll see if the response will require a cap on #'s too? So PM me or post it here to let me know if you figure you're inand could you add your adv, rtr and paypal names so I know who's who?

Now it's official that the Soiree is going to go on the weekend of August 22/23, the pig roaster is booked and so are the toilets so that's a good start and we won't come up short there.

There should be an Argentia ferry leaving North Sydney Wednesday night arriving Argentia Thursday am. We're planning to meet all the come from aways there to offer a guided 150km offroad ride to my house. There are options to bail out to pavement all along the route so people can ride what they want. We're planning to have a couple of trucks meet there as well so people can offload panniers etc and ride unloaded for the rest of the way to my house if they so choose. More stuff is in the works, stay tuned.

Cool!

Doesn't look like there's any other option than taking the Sidney Harbor ferry?

You guys are behind the 8 ball already. Drew up my itinerary right when I got home from Airheads...

Hopefully going to bring the entire family and make a vaca of it. Then I'll gratiously give them all a couple days off from me and go riding

(in case anyone is thinking along the same lines, my research is:
Shortest driving route (to save my wifes nerves) -> Portland-Yarmouth, Cape Breton (N Sydney) to Argentia. $2500.
Cheapest -> Bar Harbor-Yarmouth and N Sydney to Port aux Basques for $1400.
(that's for 3 people (and an under 4 freebie), a car, and a bike))

Can't wait!

no promises buddy-but there are a lot of beautiful women in NF!

As for ferries, the only other option other than North Sydney to either Argentia or Port Aux Basques is going the long way round through Labrador which inviolves 3 ferries total. In case you're wondering it took me 4000km (1100 offroad) to get to Cromag via that route

If you made it earlier in the summer, it might dovetail well with our Sag-Wagon idea, since I plan on inflicting my family upon you next summer anyway...

Lots of roads up in Mike's neck of the woods that the Ducati would absolutely love.

John, really liked your ride report, thanks for posting. So we're heading up to Skibum's casa next summer and I have to decide 1200GSA or 400DRZ. Any thoughts?

Both.

Lotsa those guys have DRZs and ride the more difficult trails, but there's a lot of twisty paved coastal roads too. It really is a biker's paradise, except for the short season..
