Cb160 race bikes

I went to the bonneville vintage gp last weekend, and man those little cbs are cool. The racing overall was awesome but the things that really stuck out were the cbs and the f1 sidecars. I'd love to race sidecars but thats a bit unrealistic for my current situation. I can see myself building up a cb/cl 160-175 though. I spent yesterday building a hitchcarrier for my truck so I can pick one up and get going(well that and I wanted one for hauling the old dirtbike). Only problem is I can't seem to find one anywhere!

So where would I go about finding one? I know about groupwracing.com, but I'm looking to buy a cheap one(hopefully running) that I can fix/make some parts for and have at it.

I'd say check your local Craigslist as a start. I know there's been a couple CB175's offered in various conditions here, from projects to complete runners.

Good luck!

The killer is saturday(at miller) I saw three(!) in a truck for sale for 400(each) and didn't jump on it. I thought I could get one local....oops.

CBs come crawling out of the woodwork

I just concocted an obsession for little GP-class CBs myself after the Sandia Classic here in ABQ. Don't have the money myself, but here is a built WERA & AHRMA 160 in KC:

$2000 doesn't seem outlandish if it's truly set up and solid, but what do I know? ~S

Yeah probably not bad, but I want a Fowler formula bike. Plus I'm poor. I'm thinking apartment closet build. Thanks anyway!

I got mine here on ADV cheap. Join the f160 group, pre-built racers go for sale quite often. Maybe post a wanted to the ADV classifieds?? If not you know CL has 'em. Good luck!!

If you are interested in a '69 175, all original, runs perfect and is in your neck of the woods, pm me and we can talk. The price is right! I have some experience with building these up and can pass along some tips and resources.

Thanks for the tip on the Yahoo group, 305racer - I just joined.

Started calling junk yards and putting the word out to anyone I can think of - man, this is getting serious / demented.

lstzephyr, I am in the low-budget world too, so looking at under $500 starting cost if I can. Oh, and my road bike is an SV650 as well. Wish I had been at Miller with you - I saw the photos of the demo cb160 that Vicious built, and it's unbelievably cool. We had about 5 160s racing here last weekend.

I have to admit I'm intimidated by how old slopers are - not the general mechanicking, mostly the engines needing rebuilding because of the expense if I can't do it myself.

I wish there were a newer (70-83) small bike that could be built like the 160, but not so rare. Just not a 70s cb350 guy (that's half of historic vintage here). All I've come across that's at all appealing is the 78-82 CB450T, but at the Sandia track races you can't run in historic vintage newer than '78, so you're racing in Supervintage with Z1Rs and Interceptors.

My current favorite inspirational photo from our very own Notarex:

My CB175 Project

I'm working on a CB175 Cafe bike at the moment.......its a blast! Although, I need to figure out an exhaust and find some newer controls since I want my bike to be plated.

Motobits Rear Sets and Perrault Performance Clipons. Ignore the garage project explosion.

Metallic Red Flake over Primer

I'll be mouting the tires so I can put on the clip-ons, headlight, etc. This pic was after repacking the bearings.

Thanks guys! I've joined the f160 group. And I did a search on Craigslist. Unfortunately everything on cl was too nice. They wanted too much money. I just can't drop that much money at once at the moment. Still searching.

pm sent.

Just keep your eyes open on Craigslist, Istzephyr. I found my CB160 on the Boulder craigslist back in January, and snapped it up. Not running, (but ran when parked) and horrible cosmetically, but solid and complete: $300. I've mounted street legal trials tires on it, and a CL160 skid plate, and I'm planning to use it for cruising forest roads around here, and as a tiddler around town. This thread is making me want to change my plans for the bike, 'cuz those race bikes look so cool. Sadly, there's really no place to race around here, so I think I'll stick to my dirty plan.
