2 1/2 day SEQ/South central Queensland ride

After putting up a ride suggestion then having to change the date, it wasnt surprising that not many takers were up for this one. Then the destination was changed due to the fact that the couple of takers had to unfortunately pull out at the last moment, so it was left to Rick001 and myself to pick a new route and hit the road. As luck would have it Rick was on annual leave and I had a show day holiday Friday off so we took to the road. It was a kinda late morning start so it was decided to head out toward Murgon and then hit the dirt from there north. We made our way to Hivesville and up the old Gayndah rd. Its about 71k`s with about 50k`s of dirt. The road started off very fast, but then it started to get a little sandy and rutted and there were a couple of fast corners that were taken at not so text book style.
From Gayndah it was a quick check of the GPS and it was onto the Byrnestown/ Mt Perry rd. This is some very fast dirt with a few dozen cows over every rise just to keep things interesting. A quick refuel for Ricks Transalp (the DR only requires 1 fillup a day ) it was off up the Mt Perry/ Monto road. This is a good stretch of road but recent road works to the road has me thinking that it aint gunna be dirt for too much longer. After another refuel in Monto so as to be ready for the next day, we headed out to the Cania Gorge Tourist park for the night. This is a Big 4 park and for $26 for 2 tents on a site the park has excellent facilities. Gas BBQ`s, hot and cold water and even a microwave are provided in the numerous camp kitchens in the park. However to park gets booked out regularly, so if you want to crab a cabin you should prebook. However there are always plenty of tent sites.
The next day we headed out for a large figure eight ride through the area. This starts right next to the camp grounds and does a nice 50k ride through open farmland and creek beds. This road ends up hitting the main road and 20k`s down the road cuts back in for another 40ks of farmland again. Once again the ever present cows on the road were a small reminder that danger lurks over ever crest. The track virtually cuts right past the camp grounds and then heads out through the Krombit Tops NP. This is a premier adventure ride. Great smooth single car track trail with lots of switchbacks and causways to cross. There was ever the odd bit of water to cross. After reaching the top of Krombit which I must say was rather rough on the assent, we headed for the crash site of a WW2 Liberator Bomber that was missing for more than 50 years until found by a local ranger about 15 years ago. There is a 35k loop that goes to the site and comes back out again.
The site is something else as the debri is strewn everywhere and very surprised that some very interesting souvenirs are left at their final resting place as should be. We had a quick cook up for lunch in the carpark area then it was off to tackle the second half of the loop. There was a sign at the top that said "alternate route". However this seemed to be the only route as the track was supposed to be one way. So off we went. This part of the loop proved to be a bit of a challenge for a fully laden Transalp, but Rick took every steep, rocky, loose down hill slope in his stride and only had one hicup on a very steep run up hill that plateued out then took off up hill again. A momentary lost of momentum had the Tranny having a brief lie down. A quick back up and a second go at the slope proved successful. Rick was to admit that after 20,000k`s on the Transalp that this was the first time she`d been horizontal. Her cherry has been popped.
From there we headed out of Krombit and down to Caliope for fuel and a fast blat down the tar heading for Monto for the night. However the sun went dow faster than we could ride and fearing the local hopping poulation we pulled into the Many Peaks Grand Hotel for the night.
Great pub. We had the biggest steaks Ive seen in a long time and the publican and his wife were the most accomodating people you could wish for. Rooms are $40 for a single and $60 for a double. The decision to stop was proved sencible as we were told of one biker who had hit a roo a few eeks earlier and had come off second best and another a few months earlier than that who was killed. A wise choice we think.
The next day we headed back into Monto for breaky and then a run back basicly the way we came in with a slight detour through Yaroll rd. This is a great section of road that hooks back onto the My Perry- Monto road. From there it was a blat down to Biggenden and then on home. Rick continued onto Brissy as it was his anniversary today and he wanted to take the missus out for a bite and then home for some"hey honey I been away riding for 3 days and Im horny ok" intimate time together.
Turned out to be a top weekend with about 70% dirt had and some great sites taken in.
A must do ride again thats for sure.
Cheers
Craig
