She's using way too much oil for my liking - 500ml per 600km . I'm surprised seeing that she's only done 60,000kms. Anyway, the motor is coming out and I'll hand it over to someone with more mech skills than me to refresh the top end. TBC, but valves seem to be the culprits. While the heads are off, will examine for any other bits to replace... the bike is a keeper, so I'm taking a long term approach and not gunna scrimp just to make a short term saving.

Will have to ride the DR or HP2 to Birdsville next month. Unbelievably disappointed not to be taking the AT . What an epic courtship this is proving be. Purchased in April 2012, licensed Sept 2012, but wont be able to use it for its intended purpose (multi-day rides) until OCR Aug 2014!

Oh hell Shane, just when I was satisfied with my 87 Transalp, you go and do that. Well done and good luck with it.
Prick!!

Cheers

That's a bummer Shane...sorry mate, had no idea.

Are you certain that it's nothing to do with fueling. An overrich mixture or choke stuck on can wash oil off the bores and what oil are you running if you don't mind me asking.

That bike looks so SWEET btw !!!!

Remove the chokes all together. I did. They have a nasty habit of sticking.

Geez Mate,

That's properly annoying. If Hodgo & Willy's suggestion is no good, and you still end up removing the engine, here is my suggestion on minimum work at this point:

1. Recondition Heads;
2. Hone & re-Ring (pending measure up of bores & pistons);
3. Timing Chains & Guides;
4. Clutch & Stator Cover Gaskets / Seals if applicable; &
5. Optional whilst clutch cover off - inspect clutch & install heavy duty clutch springs.

Cheers,

Dan.

Thanks fella's.

In the 1,500kms I got to ride it, I was getting 5.5 ltrs/100km... so logic was telling me that it couldn't be running rich. But to eliminate running rich as the possible cause, I got it on a dyno and told the guy the background. After dyno he concluded it was running spot on, if anything a touch lean, but he said he wouldn't change anything. He commented that the blue smoke on overruns(?) probably meant the valves will need attention in the near future.

So then I took it to a mech here who has worked on these v-twins in the past and asked him to balance the carbs. After mucking around with it for a while, and not being able get the carbs 'just right' and the blue smoke seeming to get worse, he removed the plugs. The rear plugs were OK but the front were wet with oil. He stuck a screwdriver down the pot and said to me "mate, there was that much oil in there, the screwdriver was like a dipstick, the heads gotta come off, its gunna be the valves".

To save myself plenty of $$$, I'm taking the engine out. He gave me a good lead on a specialist engineer in Perth with a great reputation in the industry.

Hey Willy, no worries mate, there's no way either of us could know what was lurking in there.

Dan - Thanks. Appreciate the tip mate. I was chasing that sort of info from the poms but got no answer. Thanks again.

If its valves, do both heads and fit bigger inlet valves. You won't be sorry.

Not being a professional, but I could do the motor for you as well if you're interested (at least I've got Africa Twin experience )

Ride through Bellthorpe yesterday was a bit wet and a huge tree down.
The TA and AT battled through the mud though.

Tim, but he put it up on Fleabay last week and the next morning it sold. It was a very good one too! One of the boys on here has it now.

Still doesn't stop me lusting after one. Problem would be that I'd have to sell the Transalp, and she's like one of my kids now. I'm thinking of leaving my house to her when I die.

What did you do with your V Twin on the weekend?
Left it hibernating uder its winter coat while I got pissed with you at Angorichina and rode my pissy little DRZ.
Good to see you made it home safely John.
Catch up again.
Cheers
Tim
