XR650L needing help with keihin fcr 41 adjustments
hey guys, i have a 1996 xr 650 L and i recently bought a keihin fcr 41 carb for it. it takes a long time to start the bike from cold and it does not seem to run just right. oh and did i mention that it is HARD TO START.....the carb has:
a zipty fuel screw
168 main jet
48 pilot jet
70 leak jet
needle height is set at the 4th of 7 slots (middle position)
another jet that is 155 - dont know what jet it is but it is right next to the main and pilot jets.
a uni pod filter
i dont know a whole lot about these carbs, and i am looking for some pointers on adjusting it. my elevation is somewhere between 700 and 725 feet above sea level and i have a couple other engine mods that include a 680 kit and a high flow header and exhaust. can someone point me in the right direciton for adjusting the carb? Thanks.

Assuming all other parameters are OK,( valve clearances, ign. timing, compression and a clean air filter) I would guess that you are likely too rich.
The pumper action will quickly flood an engine if you twist that throttle more than a few times when trying to start the bike.
Using the choke and twisting the throttle will flood the bike.
I run a FCR 39 on a DRZ 400. One quick twist of the throttle when cold will allow the bike to fire right up.
Whats the plug like? wet with fuel? Color of electrode?

if I remember correctly my jetting was around the 160 main.
the taper of the needle is often overlooked also.
Call Sudco or James at JD jetting, he is a master and a very cool guy!
good luck that carb transformed my bike when I had the same mods as you have ou will love it... now go get a fork brace (best money spent on a 650L) some gold valves and you will really be amazed!
