Winding to the Manukau Heads lighthouse...

The plan was go to Tauranga, but when we finally got our butts out of bed on Saturday morning, we changed plans to just go to the Lighthouse at Manukau Heads. This was still a 260km run, but it would mean that we would be home for dinner and our own bed that night.
This turned out to be slightly more interesting than just motoring down state highways in the same direction as everyone else. As we didn’t get our shit together early enough, we hit the wall of traffic through Auckland. By 10 am we made it to Waiuku, a small township based on an inlet south west of Auckland. I begged Joe not to stop at the “Autobahn cafe” in Drury again, the coffee there sucks ass, so we managed to find a packed cafe in Waiuku that had yummy muffins and coffee that didn't taste like feces.

After we stuffed our faces, we took to the sweeping roads winding their way though towards the heads. It was a bit slow going due to the road surfaces being not totally ideal, with some smattering of gravel around every turn. We managed to get lost a few time because we didn’t bring the K1200S with the GPS mount, but opted to ride the KTM and put the GPS in my awesome new Axio tail bag. We managed to get on track and soon after came to some of the most breath taking scenery I’ve seen in New Zealand. The road seemed to slice into the side of the mountain as you teetered along the upper ridges giving way to lush green pasture dotted with barnyard toys. I was so enthralled with the images I almost forgot to ride my bike.

The last 1000 meters we met a gravel road, so we slowly navigated our way through that no problems. Parking at the bottom of the Light house, we hiked our way up to the top to reveal an amazing view across the harbour. I could stand there all day watching the flurry of waves mashing up besides each other in the mouth of the harbour. Anyways, enough about mashing and mouths.. We decided that we wanted some lunch, so we beelined it back to Auckland, this time we didn’t get lost.. with a quick stop for the KTM’s small bladder then for some wicked sushi for lunch. Not a bad morning for being lazy and tardy....

I would consider end of February on. Most people's holidays are done and the weather is pretty stable.

A few years ago I did a head to head ride, before the lighthouse was rebuilt....just the weather station, and I rode right up the path.

This is from Mt Donald McLean looking to South Head.I went to Whatipu, but you can't see much there.

South Head looking North.

Great photos motu. I'm actually picking up a DR650 next week so I'm really keen on doing more of the gravel roads. Might have to do that ride!
