A river runs through it.

Went out to survey the damage today. We really dodged a huge bullet. If the rain had come down any faster, things would have been much, much worse. We received 10" since Sunday night and it was as steady as if someone had a valve controlling the flow. Here are some pics from todays trip around the county.

This is River Road in Bryson City. It is the gravel road across the river from Hwy 19.

This is White Oak Falls that flows into the upper Nantahala River. Those of you who've ridden with me at the rallies might remember stopping to see White Oak Falls on our way up the Nantahala River Road on our way to Tusquitee Rd. though it didn't look anything like this.

This is the Nantahala River at NOC. You can see that the river is just leaving its banks.

This is my Silver Creek Cabin up Silvermine Rd. The creek was really thumpin!

A river really does run through it. Or at least under it. This is my shot of one of the condemned trailers on Water Street in Bryson City. The creek was diverted into a buried culvert for about 200'. The creek jumped the culvert and reclaimed its old creek bed. That ditch is about 5' deep under that trailer. If it wasn't for the steel frame, it would have collapsed into the ditch. This is really sad because it displaced about 5 really poor families who have nowhere to go. There really is a shortage of low cost housing in Swain County and now there are 5 fewer units.

Some of you may remember stopping here to see the "Horns of God" Rapid on the upper Nantahala River.

Here's what the same rapid from the same angle looked like today.

Sorry for the hijack but I thought you flatlanders should be made aware of what was going on here in the hills while you all have been enjoying relatively mild weather. My wife is at Myrtle Beach right now and had the nerve to send me a pic of her toes in the sand. 70 deg. and sunny. I haven't seen the sun in 5 days and I'm about ready to slit my wrists!!!

Forecasting up to 6" of the white stuff but I have no idea how that can happen by morning. It's still 54 deg. out there at 9pm. Of course last Sunday had the forecast at 50% chance of rain for Tuesday only and look at what that got us. 2 kinds of weather forecasters here in the mountains.
1). Weather Guessers
2). Weather Liars

I live in NW North Carolina, near the VA border, and the start of the snow is being pushed back. We just hit freezing temps here and it will have to start soon and snow a lot if we are going to get the amount of snow they are predicting. Still saying 3 to 6" in the Eastern Mountains and 6" to 12" a little further west.

Edit: 4:00 update. It just started snowing...

Hard.

I've been up at Massanutten all week.
Sunday was only mostly horrible for snowboarding.
The other days complete crap.
It hasn't started snowing yet really even though it was supposed to start last night.
Stupid weathermen.

We did get some fast and hard snow over on my side of the hill. Unfortunately I had to drive my wife to a meeting in Knoxville. Normally a 45 minute drive. Took 2 hours and 45 minutes.

I see y'all NCers let 441 fall apart in the park. A football field sized chunk slid down the mountain. Dang. I almost drove that Sunday. Should have.

I see stars in a clear sky for the first time in a week! That means The sun will come out tomorrow. (Now that song from Annie is in my head) Over 15" total rainfall in the past 4 days. No snow though. My kids are so disappointed.

We ended up with 9.5 inches of snow in West Jefferson (about 20 miles NNE from Boone). Drive plowed and the streets are looking passable. Many power outages.

I drove in from WV hoping for some snow, but we only got about 3 in. Taking the Boy Scouts camping tonight for the weekend, the annual Klondyke Derby. Should be fun. Here is a picture out my office window at the blizzard that is crippling Winston-Salem

I drove through a good amount of snow last night to take my wife back and forth to Knoxville. I left the 4x4 truck at home and drove my Buick Roadmaster. I amused myself by passing stuck 4x4s with my rear wheel drive car. Laughed at the BMW M5 whose 400 hp only made it tougher for his traction control to keep up. I only got worried once when I got stopped on an uphill grade and the car spun the tires over a time or two just releasing the brake. Then it hooked up. mmmMMmmm Michelin truck tires.
