Okay, here's my obligatory NOT THE GRAB pic.
I seem to recall that the line was kind of blurred as to whether it's a rocket or a missile due to the engine...

Yep, it is indeed a TM-61 Matador. They were first carried by B-52's flying out of Selma Air Force Base, a SAC installation in the 50's.

It was on the property before it became a church is what I was told.

The Matador is the first operational surface-to-surface cruise missle built by the U.S.

Thanks for the information! Very interesting! How did it end up there?

lots of Matador info here
http://www.wsmr.army.mil/PAO/wuaws/P...dmissiles.aspx

seems it had both a rocket booster and a jet engine

it was guided by ground based radar, with a range of 250 miles, but the missile had a range of 640 miles!!

interesting stuff, I see no mention of it being utilized or tested as air-surface, drop any links to it being carried by B-52's please.

From what I read last time it was used on east coast during the Cuban missile crisis. Other than that was primarily based in west Germany.

I'm glad to see this tag is generating so much interest.

I just hope there is someone who hasn't tagged it yet and is interested in riding out there!! :)

The tag went back here? What is this #4...#5?....#12? Lol.

If you stick around the owner comes over and gives you the whole run down on the history as he is probably just as old as the missle lol

Wolf and Pink, it got there because a man named Big bought it as an attraction for his restaurant which is the greenish home to the right if your infront of the building. It went under, and then was turned into a baby cloths factory. It went under. Now its a deaf or blind (can't remember) church, and they are trying to get it as a historic marker. Bricks will be sold at that point and a base with engraved bricks will be erected.

The field behind it use to be a small airfield apparently many many moons back

Last time the tag was here I grabbed it and this intel was brought to you via the owner of the church

Probly not the same owner of this one at Carolina Beach.
