I agree the G/S is one of the best for on/off road touring. But it can become a handful in really rough offroad. That said , it wasn't really designed for that once you are fully loaded with panniers and huge tank. It does most of it very comfortably.
The broken leg was caused by the panniers (common problem) when I dumped in soft sand. Didn't get a cast on until I had finished the dirt ride and ridden home, 3,000 miles and 3 weeks later. No one said I was bright1

I used to own this baby, it now lives somewhere in Toronto:

R80G/S, VIN 6362759, Canadian Model, built January 1982, first registered 09/82 in Toronto

So there were 1982 G/S models in Northamerica!

have been looking for a long time. spoke to the owner within 80 minutes of your post...was in my truck a half hour later. drove the 700 miles in ~10 hours (love a posted 75 mph speed limit in the west), pulled into his driveway at 2300 MST, looked at the bike for 30 minutes and loaded her up.

I also alerted this thread to #2406. Happy to help. Until I decide to pull the trigger myself.

sorry for the delay. internet has been cut off to my neighborhood for the next couple of weeks while the provider figures out its easement issues.

here's a pic:

appears to be in pretty good condition. odo not working, but PO estimates ~40k miles. has a works shock, factory bags, and starts/runs/shifts well. very happy with this bike, but it does mean that the ST and a GS will be going to the flea market this weekend.

happy new year,
pat

Wow - four beemers - two GSs, one G/S and an ST. When you jump in, Pat, you don't just test the waters with a big toe! Welcome to the obsession!

I've got to ask. I've been around these bikes for a few years but It's only the US guys who refer to "Works Shocks" I haven't a clue what you mean by this. What are they?

Works Performance was one of the aftermarket shock makers which had a shock for the G/S. White spring and blue body as I recall??

Looks like they still have something...
