New to me '84 R80gspd. Number 2968.

I think it's an early '86 build, which has had three owners in NZ (it still only has 55,000km on it).

1981 r80 g/s

I purchased this guy from the original owner last year.

He purchased it in Mountain View CA from a friend who owned or worked at the dealer.

The bike has the factory single pannier rack and factory (looking) heated grips.

I was told the bike was prepped by BMW for a female French journalist who rode it to Alaska and back... Then sold to the PO as the first owner. It lived its life on the Oregon coast and has serious surface corrosion issues but relatively low miles at 14K.


The VIN decoder says it was built in Feb 81

Finally and for once it's the bike and not the rider!

Really? Would PO have done this intentionally - fastener clearance or some such? Thanks for the observation, I'll take a look. I've got a few others i want to post up in a thread as I'm getting to know (love ) this machine.

Nope, the shock mount bolts are the same part number for top and bottom and the shock should be the same width top and bottom, so I don't see how it could be out of necessity. Very possible to install the shock upside down, but not advisable. Shocks should always go rod down / cylinder up. Emulsion shocks especially. Reservoir shocks will still function correctly upside down, but you'd increase your unsprung weight by installing them upside down. Emulsion shocks (like yours) when installed upside down will have the damping piston in the air space at the top of the cylinder which will have a detrimental effect on your damping.

Yes they are. And thanks for the additional explanation. Sadly I don't have the experience to know better, very glad you pointed it out.

I went to paperwork that came with bike and pretty sure I know what happened. Shock was bought from BMW of Santa Cruz, shipped to PO in Indiana in 2008. Directions in Deutsch only. I tried to capture 'Wilbers' on the shock itself, upside down might have clued installer but ...



Any - fixt now.

Could be a battery clearance problem - there are two sizes of 51xxx batteries which will fit the bike , but one is 5mm bigger in every dimension, and will hit some shocks, even with the battery carrier packed forward till it is touching the air box.

The Motobatt site has all the information on battery sizes, and as their equivalent battery is the larger size it takes a bit of work to get it in. Touching the the shock doesnt seem to do it any harm though - mine has performed perfectly for almost 3 years now, in my 1000 cc bike.

Hi everyone

This should be the right thread to make my first post and introduce myself…

A year ago I bought the G/S, it's a 1981 vin: 3885. The bike was originally sold in Germany then
imported here in Italy few years ago. It was in pretty good shape, i replaced the old battery and changed the faulty starter.
Oh, and without the help of you, ADV folks, I wouldn't have been able to repair the odometer by myself…thanks for your precious ADVices!
