Question Identification of original PD versions?

When I bought my G/S 6-7 years ago it was fitted with the Paris Dakar tank but I'm not sure that it was originally sold as a PD model or "just" a regular G/S. Does anybody know how to find out which VIN numbers were sold as PD versions?

As far as I know the PD stuff was sold as a kit. Some dealers may have installed it before selling the bike. I don't believe there is any special run of VINs.

Yes and no. There was a PD kit available which consisted of the seat/rack combo and the tank, but there were also what I think were some "factory" PD versions sold which came with the chrome (not painted) muffler with heatshield borrowed from the ST model as well as black painted fork sliders. If I had to guess, it was a way to get rid of some lingering ST parts when the model was discontinued at the end of '84. As you said though, I don't think these bikes had their own range of VINs.
