No offense

Anyway the bike has a 12 digit VIN and the last five are R80GS..

When I went to register the bike the lady behind the counter was giving me a big plate..

me: That big of a plate??
her: Yeah..
me: Are you sure?
her: Yeah..
me: For a motorcycle??
her: A mtorcycle?!?
me (smiling): Yeah..
her: BMW motorcycle?!??
me: Yeah..

she goes over the entire applications --annoyed to put it mildly

her: what kind of motorcycle?
me: R80GS
her (dead pan voice): are you a comedian?

Long story short I had to bring a trace of the VIN number in order to get the bloody thing registered.

JRP,

Ah, the tougher blue model. Hey, that old rusty bike really cleaned up well. We should get our bikes in the same place and compare notes.

You still have the old collector and other old bits?

My story...

So I pull up to the north gate of Yellowstone national park back in 1996 on my old R100RS.. the lady at the gate says...

"BMW huh?, how long have they been making motorcycles?"

That is the "before" picture, I'm still trying to get the pipes and collector off without resorting to my sawsall, any hints? I still have to strip it down to the bare frame for painting.

Nice looking bike Dave, but I have a question for you, where do you get those cool heat shields, I have seen them on other bikes, maybe not identical, but close?

made from thick aluminum plate. Big drill bit, skil saw, grinder, high-temp black paint.

We're in Kyrgyzstan right now making our way to Africa. Here's the preparing the bike thread.

i ran into a guy this weekend who has an 81 for sale. it's a sweet bike, rt tank, corbin seat, bmw bags, acerbis mini fairing. i didn't get the miles but it is a super sweet bike. he's asking 5k and isn't budging. if you're looking for a sweet r80g/s drop me a pm and i can get you guys in touch.

if you have any intentions of offerring less than his asking price don't bother asking for his info.

I'm in...

...finally.

1984, last four digits: 3040. I still find myself going into the garage just to look at it sometimes. Does that mean there is something wrong with me?

the guy that restored it for me in Phoenix, AZ made that heatshield. I could ask if he would be interested in making more, if you like.

a better photo too, if you want it.
