Seems to be a little activity here and some new inmates.

Anyone up for a D/S ride this weekend?

It's only 40% chance of rain Saturday and Sunday. I can probably dodge a few drops! Besides if we don't ride, it won't rain...

Sunday Ride

Had a good ride today with HG. Went from Wolftown store through RWMA up to the park yellow pole. The road was in good shape, even the long steep hill was smooth. Rode from there back through WT and started the Blakey Fire road from the Ruth side. The first part of the road has been graded due to logging. All logging action stopped about where the cattle guard is. From there typical Blakey. The mud holes had some water, but the bottoms were solid. Went all the way through Blakey and through Rapidan Camp. Road was great!!
As always you see something bizarre up there.
Halfway through Blakey..... We come across some guy in a Dodge Omni hatchback.
Yes, we said WTF, too.

Which one of you hoodlums left all those marks on Wesley Chapel Rd. yesterday? My inner bushman says you were going north at around 4 pm.

Hello,

I am a Charlottesville Rider, 1150GS, and I have been searching for some fellow GS riders for a while now. I am interested in doing a good bit off-road riding. I used to live in Lynchburg for a while, 30min from the Blue Ridge PKWY which was nice, but I don't really know any trails (legal) that I can ride around here. Ideally I would like to do some overnight camping and trail riding too. Heck I would just like to hang out with some other GS/ADV riders cause all my friends have Harley's and are not that fun to hang with.

Had a question for you Charlottesville area riders... Are any of the fire roads open to motorcycles between Graves Mountain and the Skyline Drive, or do I need to slab it?
Also, any recommendations for routes (suitable for a big Triumph with streetish tires) around that area would be greatly appreciated.

Answer to Fire Road Question

There are some great fire roads in Madison that are very doable on a big ADV bike.
Then there's Blakey.....

I've ridden up there most of my life. Here lately I have to decide between 950 and 450 for riding up there. There are fire roads on the Graves Mountain Lodge side and fire roads on the Wolftown/Graves Mill side. Most are pretty easy. Blakey is a bit more of a challenge. Very similar to the road between the Coal road and BRP. Only there's no sand, just water/mud holes. Busy with MX track renovations right now, but would happy to show you around up there sometime.

It's closer to Buena Vista but Alahambra and Wiggins Spring are both good dirt roads as is Cambell's Mtn Road and Crabtree Meadows Road. Cub Creek Rd turns into dirt at the crest.

That being said there are guys that can do Big Levels (the road between Coal and BRP) and Shoe Creek on big bikes but not without TKC's or the like on both the front and the back. I made it about a third of the way up Big Levels from the BRP on Saturday before prudence told me to turn around.

If you mean can you get to the Skyline Drive legally from Graves Mtn, the answer is not without going up to 211 or down to 33.

Otherwise follow vabuckaroo68

Huh. Guess since I don't have a GS I'm not worth hanging with. (But we already knew that, eh? ).
Big Levels about the same as Blakey? I drove Grimmboy's truck pulling a trailer through Blakey, no way in the hell I'd try that on Big Levels.
YMMV.
And, if you're down by Alhambra (FR63), ride Irish Creek up to the BRP then a short bit of 56 east and north to find North Fk Tye River Rd. Goes down to 56, neat road.

But you had a GS. Oh Blakey is fun. I road it on the Vstrom. Just go slow and jack the rear an inch.

I'd hang with you.

Five of them to be exact. I've been known to ride KLR's, DR's, DRZ's (currently) and other peasant models too.
