I don't know about untagged bikes riding on it, but I really want to check out this Blakey Ridge Fire Road.

I'm sure that Blakey is OK for dirt bikes, but just don't know about RWMA, SNP or GWNF roads. There was time when I rode them in the 80's and didn't get hasselled much.
Let me know when you want to go. I'm really wanting to try the EXC on Blakey.

Since no one else posted up I'll give it a shot. Don't hold me to this but I'm pretty sure it is correct.

RWMA: Yes, I agree, Blakey should be OK for a dirt bike. They still run ATV's up there right? If not then you may want to look into it a little more.
You still need the permit to be on their property, vehicle or not. I don't know of any other roads like Blakey in the RWMA.? There used to be the road along the Rapidan and the one along the Conway but they have been closed since the landslide events back in what...1996? Any single track is just for foot and horse traffic. Mtn. bikes are even illegal which is a shame as some of the trails are great for a Mtn. bike.

SNP: Definitely OFF limits for anything motorized, except the Drive itself. The only thing they allow on the trails is horse and foot traffic. They don't even allow Mtn. bikes on the old roads they run their police vehicles on.

Sorry for the long post but it's kinda funny...

I got stopped one day by the park police AND the County sheriffs while riding thru Browntown one sunny day.
I was heading East on Bentonville Browntown Rd. I was following a small pickup truck. As we were cresting a hill, on a curve, a park police officer coming the other way saw me and actually ran off into the ditch trying to get turned around!
You can tell when they want you...at least so I've heard.
I thought to myself, I'm getting away from this guy! Luckily the truck I was following turned within 100 yards so I goosed it a little.
I got about two miles down the road and didn't see him anywhere. Whew!
Came into Browntown and turned left, towards Front Royal. At this point I was doing the speed limit. I made it about a mile down the road and passed another Park police truck who hit it's brakes. WTF is going on? Got about another 1/2 mile and passed a sheriff who slammed on the brakes.
I tried to keep up a good pace but He caught up to me in no time. I maintained the speed limit after he caught up. A friend of mine lived about a mile away on another road. I wanted a witness to whatever was going to go down so I took that road. By now all three vehicles were behind me.
I pulled into my friends driveway...but he wasn't home.
One park vehicle pulled right behind me as the sheriff and the other park vehicles blocked me in. I don't like this!
Turns out three or four DS bikes poached a run on one of the local fire roads in the park and they found out about it. It had happened two hours earlier. They must have been all over that part of the county looking for those guys. So they just assumed I, with all the saddle bags and top case, had to be one of the culprits, returning to the scene of the crime.
I did tell l them I could show them exactly where I'd been for the last week with the route in my GPS unit. After that they calmed down some. One of them started asking me inquiring questions about the GPS unit.

So no, you can't ride in SNP.

GWNF: On their forest service roads, I believe you have to be registered and tagged. Of course OHV areas like Taskers you don't need tags but you do need the day or year permit.

That's what I've been led to believe anyway.

Of course, if no one sees you, were you really there?

Yes, something with a little more go, better suspension and brakes. The dr200 has been an awesome bike to learn how to ride off road, but I really want a little more now. Still trying to decide if I'll sell the dr or keep it for friends to ride and let other people use it to learn. I love the little DR.

This is actually not the bike I want since a KDX is a 2-stroke. A WR250 or KLX250 Or anything comparable will be what I am looking for.

tuffstuff,
I'll have to say that I like my WR250R a lot. Turned over 7,200 miles yesterday, bought it Jan. 3, 2012 with 389 on it. Went to WV more times than my GS ADV last year, nothing but routine maintenance, tires. You're welcome to try mine, still the same height as when you sat on it at the RTE in G'ville, one slightly lower may fit you a bit better.

If you are ok with my trying your bike I will take you up on it. If you are free this weekend I'll ping you!

Anyone have/know of a decent, inexpensive ($5k or so) "basic transportation" kind of car for sale?

You could try Chris's Cars in Orange. Higher mileage and lower prices.
