I have an 83, apparently in the first batch of US bikes at 7051 and built in Oct 82.

35.7K miles. I appear to be the 4th owner.

#7788 sounding off. An '84 made in 9/83.
My ride just turned 25 last month, I guess. Cool.

I've owned the bike since the mid 90's
Before that a little old man in West Seattle who put maybe 5,000 miles on it.
Before that it was owned by a little old lady from Pasadena Ca.
I know she bought it used. and that it was crashed and put together again.
I don't know how it made it's way up to Seattle.
But I brought it back down.

I put around about 20,000 miles on the bike.
It's now awaiting a light restoration/rebuilding

It's been down for the normal airhead issues
Bad coil. Bad charging system, bad bean can...

I think the tranny might need a going over as well.

Someone stole my side cover.
The chrome rear rack went all rusty so I had it powdercoated black

I need to pull the engine and refinish the frame.

I put GS bars on it and it's got a GS tank waiting to be installed.

I've got an early 83 - appears to be January as a matter of fact. #7376.
Not sure how many previous owners or much of it's history. It's kind of sad cosmetically, but runs nice. I was left out quite a bit by the PO. It's got a custom dash, bicycle computer, no gauges, and mild dual sport tires. He rode everywhere and anywhere on it. The reason I got it was the PD tank, but now I want to make it nice and pretty.

I bought my 1983, about two weeks ago with ~67,000 miles (now ~68,000 miles). serial number: 620-7642...So, it appears to be 3/1983. So far, it looks like we've gotten a bunch of 1983s...any 82s or 84s out there??

Bad coil, bad turn signal relay, old battery, clutch cable, front break pads (all replaced). Just had some service done (all fluids changed, and Valves adjustment), and it's getting better every day...everything seem to be OK for now, but my mechanic(s) warning me about the tranny/ final drive rebuild job comming up soon. "time to save up some money (about $800-$1000)", one guy said. And that he's never seen an airhead without a tranny rebuild over 100K miles... The other mechanic told me that it would cost me at least ~ $2000 "to fix this bike right..."
I'm a little bid worry...but for now, it seems to run fine.

I'm probably the 4th owner. 1st owner is around 80 and still rides a superscooter, lives at same address and same phone number as when he bought the bike in '83. 2nd owner has passed on. 3rd owner is an electrician who kept excellent records and maintained bike well. I bought 4 years ago at around 67k miles and prompty attached sidecar. Did valve job at 88k and transmission rebuild at 98k, engine still has 130 pounds compression on original rings. Just turned over 100k miles, though transmission leaked oil out neutral switch and had to be replaced with the one from my R65LS. I got carried away with the spline lube and clutch occasionally slipped, so just put in new clutch and kickstart tranny from my lemon R100GS.

Looking at your serial number, ours were probably in the assembly building at the same time.

On my trip up to alaska in June, my subframe cracked as a result of Jesse luggage's crappy mounts. Instead of repairing an already relatively weak subframe and having it break again later on some other trip, I decided it would be best to replace it with one from an r100gs which is significantly sturdier. Since the subframe from the GS is wider it required a new seat, and since I had to buy a new seat anyway, why not a badass solo seat? The subframe was pretty much bolt-on, but one of the mounting holes was about an 1/8" off and required a little tweaking to make it work. I got the idea from this thread:

Don't worry, there were no permanent modifications made anywhere and I saved all the original parts so it can all be put completely back to stock again.



This shot shows it a little better - there's a bit of a gap between the seat and tank, but overall I think it's a huge improvement.
