Aha, and that's why they changed also CDI unit placement quite quickly on TA's as well...
Rectifier also is placed in wrong place and wrong position... And it gets quite hot... OK, it works for some time as most semiconductors can work up to some ~120C degrees, but such temperatures decrease their working life dramatically...
Im my opinion Locorider's bracket around it will make things worse as so thin aluminium is poor conductor of heat. And natural air flow around it now will be even less...
But some more holes in bracket and ball bearing fan between bracket and rectifier would be perfect- in such way fan is protected as well.

Don't bother with a CPU fan for the Transalp regulator/rectifier. This is a good, heavily finned design. If you want to see a bad, failure-prone design, go look at what's on the VFR750. Those things are appalling, with hardly any heatsink to them.

My VFR750 R/R failed -- twice -- so I replaced it with one from a GSXR. This one is the same brand and style as the Transalp unit, and it's operated perfectly ever since.

I also don't think there's any reason to be concerned about the bracket being over the R/R. It doesn't look to me like it's touching, nor is it going to significantly obstruct airflow. Mind you, I can't think of a good reason to put a bracket like that anywhere on a TA... ;-)

By the way, my TA's R/R is going strong at 30-something thousand miles, many of which were put on in 110-degree weather in Arizona. Corrosion is your electrical enemy, not the TA's regulator/rectifier. Clean up those connectors and pack them with silicone dielectric grease to keep them corrosion free.

I took that as a nice way of him saying, you just killed that voltage regulator.

IMHO that aluminum box covering it is NG (not good) and for sure will not help cooling at all. Hope I'm wrong.
No, I just meant his water level is low. Nothing more, nothing less. I don't think the regulator is going to go up in smoke because of the bracket.

We're starting to sound like BMW riders, over analyzing the situation.

Jim.

Guys guys... thank you for all your comments and opinions, after all this is a forum, where ideas are suppose to come up and float. And I respect all of them.

I knew what Jim wanted to say! When I first took off the side panel, I noticed that, that by the way, its right there on the lower mark. For now, let me be the lab mouse! The main reason is to have all the electrics in one place and to use a space available under the side panel. If I need to alter the design, thats what this is for...trial and error.

For now the bike is grounded, until I do the muffler soldering so I'll make a few more holes, and find a cpu fan and see if it survives the caribbean heat and high humidity (and lotsa rain!).

I'll make some holes in the top and bottom, and the necesary ones to fix the fan, if it fits on the bracket.

I already ordered the voltage monitor....I dont want the bike to die on me on the ALCAN!!!

But for now, lets ride along!

You're gonna love the sound from the GSXR can . I think it could stand to be just a bit louder but I don't think the hassle involved in trying to get at the internal baffles would be worth it.

Anyone installed this type of cruise control on your bike? It looks like it shortens your actual grip length by 1/4 inch or so after it's all mounted. Anyone have first hand knowledge?

This is the type I've used in the past and really liked it's minimalist fit. Unfortunately I don't see how it will fit on the funky cruise control of theTransalp.

I have tried to adapt this cruise with little success, it does not fit well with heated grips and does work with the TA dual throttle cable housing on the TA.

I have the handle bar ends with cruise on order from twisted throttle due on April 22.

It looks big but I have used another brand of bar end cruise on another bike it worked great.....if it is too big I will try to mod and turn it down on the lathe.

Caterpillar 8M4991 O-ring

A good cheap cruise control is the Caterpillar 8M4991 O-ring - you can get them for $1 each from this e-Bay Seller

Fitting Trax Panniers to Givi Racks on a Transalp

Hi All,

Listen up... I want to fit a set of Trax Panniers, (see link)

Bykebitz Motorcycle Accessories Ltd TraX Side Panniers

to my Transalp, which is fitted at present with Givi racks which I would like to keep on. I emailed the guys at BykeBitz who said

"You will need to remove the givi from your bike and start over with sw-motech frame work. You buy the sw-motech pannier rails, trax fitting kit, trax boxes and locks."

Now, I can't see why I need to do this as surely their "adaptor kit", (see link)

Bykebitz Motorcycle Accessories Ltd Adaptor Kit - for TraX Side Cases

could easily be made to fit on to the side of my Givi racks?

I'm no stranger to a bit of welding, drilling, bashing etc... like I said, I can't see with a bit of adapting why the "adaptor kit" can't make these panniers fit, but what do you guys think... any advice, has anyone done a similar mod?

Also, has anyone bought a set of TraX; if so what do you think of them?

Cheers

Potski

Hiya Boys. Well it's been a while, but I'm getting settled in here in the UK. I figured that I'd post up a few pics of my recent riding adventures. Of course the shots of the Africa Twin are just to make Dave drool! Man that thing is sweet.

Enjoy: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showp...12&postcount=1

Trax

Also, has anyone bought a set of TraX; if so what do you think of them?

I once had the Trax bags and liked them for their fit/finish. They were pretty, but not sure how they would stand up to off-road rigors/dropping of a bike in the same way that Al Jesse bags do. As far as the SW motech quick disconnect racks (at least the ones for the Africa Twin), they ABSOLUTELY SUCK!!! They are so flimsy that I was able to push down on the bags with my pinky finger and the whole set-up would move up/down. Furthermore, I had fitmet issues (bolts not aligning) with the rack. I since went with the Touratech set-up and I am happy with it. In short, the bags are nice but the quick disconnect racks were not, in my opinion, suitable even for mild off-road use.

Hi Dave

You're right - it is a sweet bike. Certainly heavier than my Transalp but makes up for it because I think it's sweeter.
