Could it be that they were the (illegal) aliens?

Moving right along...

We decided to fill the DR , put in the remaining fuel, and see if it would continue to run.

It seemed to work, the bike kept running this time!

Now we had a worry about available fuel, and if we could keep both bikes going...because the DR just wasn't happy when the level dropped down...and my KLR was probably going to have to get back on whatever fuel was in the tank.

It was getting dark, (a bit of a worry in the north 'cause of the animals) and cold.

Maybe it was a logging funded town that ran out of controversial timber?

Great story. Thanks for the pictures. I've been meaning to get up that way for some time now. Plan to bring the fishing pole when I go.

interesting old town. I see one of the buildings looks like it says "food rooms" so I would think there was more going on around there that was bringin in outsiders.

I am beginning to think that it might be a native village or something to do with the first nations community.

i'm also thinking maybe a native village relocated by the government or something. Can't see who else would have the money to build that much stuff in the middle of nowhere.
Maybe decomissioning of the highway had something to do with it's demise also??

Quote:
The entire length of Hwy 808 was actually a part of Hwy 599 initially. On December 6, 1966, the northernmost 60 km portion of Hwy 599 from Central Patricia to the Otoskwin River was re-designated as Hwy 808. The highway lasted until 1983, when it was formally decommissioned as a provincial highway.

Interesting ride report Ron. That abandoned town was quite a find. I love exploring places like that.

Rick, I know it's been a while, but I just gotta get up to visit you again when I get the chance!

I've met so many people and places, and sometimes feel bad, 'cause it's so
hard to keep in touch with them all...

Where was I again?

It was starting to get dark, and colder...

Then we ran into our (previously) perfect gravel, which for some reason, the grader operator had turned into a marble hell to ride on...

For the rest, there isn't much to tell. We made the 520 km return run from Pickle Lake to the end of the road at Windigo Lake.

I switched the KLR to reserve at 487 km, and never did use the extra 5.5 litre can that I carried all that way.

We got a hotel room in Pickle, (same room at the mighty Winston motel, like we had a choice), we went to the bar, I got drunk, Bill didn't, and we crashed for the night.

It was just one of those days where you have that sense of elation: nothing went wrong, the bikes didn't break, and we're warm for the night.

Here's a few fall colours pictures, taken at Neimi Lake:

There's not a whole lot more to tell. We got up the next morning, ate and rode off into yet another cold and rainy day.

Stopped at Savant Lake for soup and tea to warm up:

The KLR was acting very strangely. A bit of choke every now and then, and it would run normally again. Turned out to be carb icing.

The homing instinct had kicked in.

The one at the end of the ride, that makes you want to go home, get off the bike, and not look at it for a while.

The ride is done, goals accomplished.

Time for home and a hot toddy.
