I really do hope that anyone who goes up leaves the time capsule as they found it...

northern most

Actually not too far to the east is a point a bit more north than discussed here, its in QC though, it ends at the James Bay. get to Matagmi QC, then JBR to Radisson, then dirt west to Chisasibi QC and the waters of the James. Did on road bikes with my dad in 1996.

May have to do this ride again some day but take some time and try some fishing along the way.

Windigo Lake - via Nipigon Lake

Planning a trip this summer. I'm looking for information about the roads north of Nipigon lake (directly north of Thunder Bay). We will be coming from the east (NY) and would like to stay as far north as possible on our approach to Windigo.

It looks like there are roads from both sides (NE and NW) but we don't know for sure if they connect over the top of the lake. The Satellite imagery makes it look like logging country, but it looks probable that there would be a road that connects over the top of the lake.

Does anyone have any info on this area/route??

One of the locals who is on here (CanuckAME) made it across the top once, but it didn't sound like much fun. I think at one time they had to build a raft, and float the bikes over one place.

And that was during the driest summer we had in years!

Back in the days of active forestry you prob could have found a way across in a dry august but my bet would be a lot of that area is overgrown and the beaver activity would have flooded a lot of the area.

someone may have better Intel but i would think a route is unlikely

Ok Gilligan, get the machete and some rope.

Thanks Ron, I was hoping for a little brighter forecast. Maybe they'll pave this when they get done with the TLH?

Any recommendations on things we shouldn't pass up while we're in the neighborhood?

The ride for me was a long time ago now, DrydenRider54, or Lappeman might have better insight at this point.

bring fishing gear (need a licence) The old Stirland lake school is a don't miss as far as a ghost town goes.

Really outside of miles of no population there are no real "sites" just a great experience driving as far north as you can on an all weather road in Ontario.

Wild camping is available where ever you go but wise to stay clear of some of the communities such as Savant Lake and new Osnaburgh. There are organized camp sites at Fitche Lake north of Savant, and Menakos Lakes, about 1/2 way between Pickle Lake and Windigo. Niether of those sites have running water or electricity but they will have cleared areas, access to a lake and an outhouse.
