Avoiding 77 on the way to Virginia (Willville MC Camp)

Anyone know of entertaining routes that avoid HWY77 going up and down from NC?

You can just take the parkway.....anything else is going to require a bunch of zig-zagging, like I like.

Wanna see a turn by turn list of the back roads I took there from West Jefferson last week?

I am in Statesville now, but dont call it home yet.

Anyway - I found something that looks better than 77. I was hoping a little dirt going up, but probably too hopeful.

You could go up through Love Valley and over Brushy Mtn....there's a bunch of gravel roads between the two and then again climbing up to the parkway. Those will take you a bit out of your way though, to parallel I-77 is going to require a lot of turns as all those roads seem to turn back onto themselves...it's easy to find yourself riding around in circles out in the chicken farms.

Here's a route that will give you some gravel and also bypasses the Wilkesboro mess... http://goo.gl/maps/hzSyb ....takes you a bit West only to have to go back East again once up on the parkway.

There's lots of dirt road option along the parkway heading to Willville too.

Take the Sprinter van. 77 is about the only good way out. 21 or 601 is eat up with traffic and lots of lights...slooooowww. I'd go through Mt Airy on 89, then run Wards Gap/Orchard Gap rd. (you ought to like this one), up to the BRP. Right to Willville.

Here's part 2....a dirtier alternate to the BRP. http://goo.gl/maps/67HVo

Here's how I navigate, do the generic google map end points then drag the line onto roads that look more interesting.

Part 2 of my route to Willville last week looked like this in google.... http://goo.gl/maps/VF62t

..and that translated to this on my tank bag after I zoomed in and copied it out ala rally route sheet.

I think you'd have fun if you did the same with those links I posted earlier.

Rt. 18 through WVA. Back of the dragon out of Marion Va.

You mean 16. Great road! You can see I have it highlighted on that old AAA map.

Unfortunately for the OP it's not in between Satesville and Willville....although taking the dirt through BG would be a nice diversion.

If you want a nice little ride with a touch of dirt after you get to Willville take 614 (Squirrel Spur) to 631 (Squirrel Creek) to 648 (Kibler Valley) and up to the Hydro plant. Small community park near there (Kibler Community Park) with a few campsites on the water. Great riding area.
If you wander thru the valley for a ways you can take 679 (Wards Gap Rd) back up to the Parkway, it's a bit more challenging than most of the other roads in the neighborhood.
Another nice touch of dirt road in the area is taking 623 from Hwy 42 into Burkes Garden. General store in Burkes Garden has decent sandwiches for lunch. Taking 622 off of Hwy 16 to hwy 42 is generally fun.
Great region for riding. Lots of camping other than Willville (nice place but busy).
