I for one like the way you think...and as for riding I would be if I only had some free time during daylight hours...

Darkness is what I dislike most about winter. Gerbings takes care of the cold and I don't care about salty roads - that's what I bought the little DR for - a cheap bike to ride through the crap (so far it has had no ill effects on the little tractor beast, but I do clean it occasionally). But, I don't ride after dark if I can help it so the riding days are short. Fortunately, the boss lets me out early a lot of days.

as a rule of thumb I am with you...early morning is more my time of day anyways

That's what I should do with the spare DR wheel's..mount an inexpensive set of 70/30 dual sport tires for winter road riding and save my Knobbies for the trails.

But then again the KLR does just fine for the occasional winter ride...

serious question here...what's the likelihood of running into a moose or deer on a snow machine trail? I have never done much riding so never thought about it. Do the critter's use the trails as an easy "road" in the winter?

They do use the trails in winter when the snow gets deep. They will run ahead down the trail a ways then reluctantly jump off. I have seen this before several times. Never met one head on.
