I've wanted to try that since I first read about it years ago, and I thought about doing it now, since this is the perfect application. And then I thought about what my wife's reaction to me welding in the the basement would be.

I used that successfully to take sleeve liners out of piston sleeves. Run a bead down the side and they would pop right out. I was going to suggest that. But I didn't want to screw up anyones steering head tube.

In my case there is no space for a punch to get to the head bearing races. I don't think all (most?) bikes are like that. The more I work on this bike, a Honda XR250R, the more I wonder if they designed it to not be serviceable. Sort of a disposable "beginner's bike" or something.
