Day Two Mauna Kea 200 Make Up Ride

0700 at the Hawaiian Style Cafe was the last we were told, Sfront and I get up and kiss our wives goodbye (Well, I kissed mine and I assume he kissed his, but it's not like we kissed them both!). The Hawaiian Style Cafe is know for their enormous portions, I heard it was recently on one of those Food stations that come with basic cable service. We plop down at the bar and take every seat, folks walk up to the door, see us, and don't even bother to come in (Sorry guys, this is a one time shot, we'll be racing next year so it won't happen again!).

You can get either pancakes or toast with your breakfast, budget minded gluttons go for the pancakes since it's only two pieces of toast vs. two pancakes that are bigger than Ed's head (I imagine a box of bisquick and a half dozen eggs are used per order). I ain't bullshitting, those things are huge!!!

If you like bacon you're in for a treat because they serve up 2/3's of a Hog with your two eggs and two scoops of rice, I think the American Heart Assn. has given this place a Five Black Star Rating!

If you're ever in Waimea in the morning this is the only place you need to go for food.

As we dismount on the Radar Hill at the Ranch in Kohala the views are incredible, it was really an opportunity of a life time to ride there. I've seen Hawaii ride reports that lament over the private property and fences, hell, if this was my place I'd limit access too. A big Mahalo to Hollywood for getting us in!

After the long grassy double track ride to the coast and the denial by the Dept. of Hawaiian Home Lands caretaker to cross their property we end up at Upolu Point Airfield and the MX track between it and the coast. This is the northern tip of the island and the Alenuihaha channel between us and Maui is reputed to be one of the roughest in the world.

A quick ride over to the Mookini Heiau (Temple) that was built back in 480ish A.D.

It's time to beat feet back to Waimea, gas up, and cut across Mana/Keanakolu Rd to our lunch stop.....

It's a long HWY drone back to Waimea from Hawi, my 13/50 geared WR250F was hating life at 55mph and my butt was buzzing like a handheld engraver by the time we stopped for gas. As we reach Mana/Keanakolu road the mist and clouds are blocking our way, just a couple of miles into the dirt Gary's Husky starts belching steam, we tighten a hose clamp and dump a camelbak into the radiator to no avail.

We call an old MK200 rider that lives five miles back down the road, Me: Say Hank, we just rode by your place, whatcha doing? Hank: Somebody broke down huh? Me: Yeah, came from Oahu and we need to make sure he gets back. Hank: I'm hitching up the trailer, the rest of you better get going, don't worry we got him covered. Auwwrryyttt!!! Thanks Hank!

20 Miles later and back in the sun we see two riders stoped, Justin snapped the chain on his CRF450R, normally I don't carry tools cause I figure I can walk to the truck and get something. This time I have an O-Ring Masterlink, a CBOA chaintool (C Clamp with a small nut) and a small pair of channel locks. First words from Justin are Dude, this is an O-Ring Masterlink, I got a straight chain!!! Me: OK, if you don't want the only masterlink within 50 miles I can take it back!!!

It works and we limp on to lunch about an hour after everybody else

Sorry to take so long in posting.
After being away from home for 11 days, stuff to do just piles up.
Spent all day just getting these two videos done!
I just want to thank Robert and family, and all the Rock Island Riders/Big Island Dual Sport Association guys for a great event.
Special thanks to Ed, Dave, and Rochelle for the support.
I know you guys think that your riding area is limited but you're soooo wrong!
You guys have a little bit of everything.
That's why I was more than willing to leave a bike there.
Trust me......the hours of plane ride is worth it!
I'll post more as I get them done.

Guava Tree 1 / Steve 0... up as soon as YT gets done with it.

PS. Hey Gasser! Good to meet you!
I'm glad you talk a lot clearer in person than you write!

I need to find a way to keep the Gopro bolted to the handlebars from fogging up. I want to change to the open back but am worried about killing the camera with an unplanned submersion.........
Some of my day 1 pix......sorry for the poor quality.

There be rocks under that stuff!!

Look! Up in the sky! Its.........NE NE!!!!!!

Ahhhh.....a little mud, a little dirt......I'm starting to feel at home!!

A little Lava on the Beach......Gasser's Trail #69.

This is not the same picture, there's just always a big rock on the right!

Get in line......no ones going up here quickly!

Right up between them there rocks.......

I tried to remember coming over the top and seeing the funky rock, then
I realized its my goggles on the bars........they tended to fog up alot too.

A little single track after the beach.

It's about time I made it out of there!!

Right after this is where I lost a battle with a Guava tree.......
Thats on the video, I'll skip ahead.
The guy without the shirt is Justin...Hawaii's version of Yanni...not the musician.

Back at it...

Thru some cool roads along the coast......

And finally the power line.....it ain't as smooth as it looks.

We ended up on Saddle road and headed up to our fuel/lunch stop.
More to follow.

After lunch and fuel we headed north on the Mauna Kea access road.
The original plan was to ride R1 around the volcano and then take Mana road up to Waimea. It was already later than planned and having ridden R1 with Southest US Thumper back in December, we didn't think there was a chance of making it for dinner with the wives before dark.
Gasser's ribs were a little sore, (as was my hand and kidney!) so the three of us decided to hit Mana Road right off.

This road starts off pretty mellow but by midway to Waimea gets a little tougher.
There's no keeping up with Gasser. Local knowledge I guess!
If I can't see over the next rise, I tend to back out of it......not Gasser.
I have over an hour of video which gets us well past midway.
Here's the first section.

If you want to see them all in sequence, I'll have them up on my YT page.

Whoa!!! Nice vids Sfront!!! I was dropping the family unit in Kona yesterday so they can catch a mainland flight today and I didn't see these until tonight. I'll be a geographical bachelor until the 23rd, wanna come back and ride for a few days???

My favorite moments were at :06 on the second vid when you say "OK. I'm Going!" and I'm thinking Dammit, he's my bud so I gotta go too...

And then at 2:24 with "That hurt!" and I thought OK, now fire that beast up and let's take a "Cut-out" to get back in the game.... No! you drag me through the mosquitoe infested root bounce to finish the trail...
That was an All Time ride! Definitely let us know when you're coming back so we can plan around the reunion Beat Down!!!

I'll try to save the 'beat down' till the end of the ride next time.
I'll definitely have "cuttin' my bars down 6 inches" on my to do list.
Also, next time I think its a good idea to go in there, make sure you change my mind.
You know we'll be back soon. Frequent flier miles just have to accumulate.
Hope K&O have a good trip. They could always come south.........(biggest ears available)

Sfront, here's what I see...your tubed out in the Banzai Pipe Line, the tip of your KTM fender is your surfboard, the Guava limbs are about to close out, and they did!
Now fighting an upside down bike in the deep jungle swirls of slippery roots and mossy rocks you managed to get both tires vertical and rolling again for the next set.

That's a pretty good analogy from an Old Time Cali Desert Runner!

Did you surf too? Come by tomorrow and we can trade Pipeline stories!!!

I'd have really liked to make Steve's BBQ but after all these years of marriage,
I've become really good at knowing my better half's limits!
If we'd been staying in Hilo I might have gotten away with it.
But that drive back to Kona wasn't her favorite.
We put over 1200 miles on the race car that week!
Next time over, I'll talk the wife into spending more time on the east side.
Nancy says she wants to try paddle boarding.......
If I remember right, there's a really nice break just north of Hilo at a local park?
If Gasser want's to really see me bust my ass, put me on a surf board!

That would be Honolii, it's on-shore 90% of the time but get's pretty clean when we have westerly or south-westerly winds.

The big "O" says come on down, he can teach her a thing or two about paddle boards, actually Steve and Lehua have a Stand Up Paddle Board Shop (right next door to BIPS) and would let her try a Demo board ANYTIME! Owen is on one of their boards here. I'm buying one next week so bring it on!

Gasser apparently thinks that the Katoom is the weapon of choice for Pipe!!!
