Hmmm, maybe we should plan a get together for all the ADV riders in Hawaii sometime... You know, like Sunset at the Summit, "come rain or shine" ?

Not a bad idea, I could do Monday before noon, Sunday is Single Track for me though there's a chance I'd pass on that, slim, but possible.

Saw you on the Puainako Extension today about 3:30.

Well, I have a picture and it did happen but my stupid phone won't load it to Photobucket, so you have to use your imagination!

I could head east on Monday, but my conference lets out around noon. If that is not too late to get a ride in with you, let me know and we will hatch a plan.

I'm down! I was thinking it would be cool to book a cabin (or a few) out at Mauna Kea and having a meet up out there so everyone island wide could come out, ride all day and not have to trek back across the island to get home the same day.

Went to Montgomery Motorsports in Hilo today. They have a leftover DR650 and a DRZ400S. I have never ridden either bike. I've owned quite a few dual sport bikes over my almost 53 years of riding now. I've owned 3-4 Suzuki's over the years and all were fine motorcycles. If I bought one of these, kit would be 90% of my transportation. But, I would like to use it to explore dirt and gravel roads on this island too. Maybe even a ride to Kona just for the hell of it. Out the door prices are $6650 for the DR650, and $6950 for the DRZ400S. I'm about 5'10". The DRZ may be a bit too tall for off road stuff.

Any comments between these two bikes for Big Island use?

Thanks, Jon

One of the most versatile bikes I've ever owned that can do pretty much anything the Big Island can throw at it, there are some basic mods to make it better and protect it.

Thumper Talk is the best source of information and there's a thread in thumpers here. I had a Green one and after it was Stolen (druggies, I found it about six months later) I got a Blue one from Montgomery they don't budge much, I got them to throw on some Dunlop 606s and not much more.

Great bikes, you ought to be fine at 5'10".

Thanks for that, US Thumper. Looks like you have two sets of wheels for yours. How are the valves holding their adjustment? Are you doing the shim replacements when needed? I know shim under buckets will not need adjustment often. How much of a job to get to the valves to just check?

The motard wheels came with the Green DRZ I bought off an inmate here, I had gone to Montgomery with $6,400.00 cash in my pocket and they wouldn't meet me at my price. Came home and checked in the used bikes and got a sweet deal from Razor1 fully set up and with a spare wheel set, extra plastics and then some, got it shipped here for less than what I would have given Montgomery, had maybe 1,800 miles on it.

Valves are easy to check and not much more to adjust provided you have good feeler gauges, micrometer and such, mine never moved over the year+ that I had the same bike. I sold it and got a WR250F, then another, then a KTM.

I was in the commuter cage....

An option for me on a sunset at the summit ride would be to throw a bike into my truck and link up after work up in the saddle, MK State Park is 1/2 a mile from the office. Mondays are normally not good due to the wee man's T-Ball practice, Fridays preferred but with a little prior planning any other day is actionable.

There's enough ADVriders on this rock, we really ought to do a Link Up one of these days. So far I only know Gasser, met HIAdv at his shop, and met Speedmonkey7 one time when we crossed paths during a non affiliated group DS Ride a number of years back.

Who's the guy that rides the late model grey BMW? I've met him a couple times on the old Saddle road near the R-1 entrance, but didn't catch his name. Greg (Need for Speed) and I met up today and went over the Saddle and all the way up Mauna Loa as well as the sights along the way up the Hamakua Coast. Good fun!
