Hi,
June/August might actually be OK to travel through Georgia.. I took the boat on my way from Finland to Iran. Boat from Sochi to Trabzon: - be sure to check (if calling) that the boat is for cars also, since they have both passenger-only and car ferries.. - The boat leaves in the evening, and arrives in Trabzon the next morning at about 7-8am. - Cars/motorcycles have to be loaded to the ferry in the morning (first come first served), so dont plan to spend a nice day in the city and drive to the boat in the evening.. - the costs were in August 2008: motorcycle 140eur + cabin 50eur. Or a bit cheaper with a pullman seat. Make sure you have your sleeping bag with you, if you have a seat. It's usually nicer to sleep on the deck, since it can be quite warm inside. - the port has a web page http://www.morport-sochi.ru/ and they have a pretty good service in english by phone. Oh.. and be prepared to have a hard time with a hotel in Sochi, since it will be fully booked at that time of the year. You might want to stay a bit away from sochi (when waiting for the boat to leave today.. or tomorrow.. or maybe the day after that..) It'll be a good journey, Niklas www.chef.fi/iran |

Thanks niklas, Sochi doesn't seem a popular place to visit. Andy

Hi Andy,
Just to clarify, I don't think there's anything wrong with Sochi as a city. It's very beautiful and popular coast resort. But if you're on a tight travel budget, you'll get cheaper accommodation maybe 20km outside Sochi. But as a city, it's very lively, clean and beautiful. |

+1 on what Niklas' saying - Sochi is not bad, it is actually a reasonably pleasant, although busy seaside resort with hotels, restaurants, night life. Getting there along the coast can be a bitch, a narrow road for all the traffic. But not a place to avoid, I would not say that. Having said that, I was there in 2005 so things may have changed.

Hi guys, thanks for the advice about Sochi, i had read a number of travellers tales of people passing through Sochi and had got the impression it wasn't a great place so thanks for putting me straight. i probably won't stay overnight there as i prefer rural locations but will spend an afternoon being a tourist once the bikes are loaded.
the information i have is the boat only sails on Thursday and Sunday is this true? Cheers Andy |
