Great road report! Fortunately my road report everyday is in Alaska. But I would love to ride to the east coast or Tierra Del Fuego. Good luck!

Great report! Awesome cue from your son at the end!

My father was an OV1 mohawk jockey in Vietnam and tought me to ride my first scooter. Unfortunately for me, his desire for travel is limited to the clubhouse and the 1st tee. He always swore if he made it to retirement he was done travelling and being cold........like you he earned the right to do what he wants. You guys earned it! Thanks to you, your son, my Pops and all the men and women who potect this beautiful country we live in and our right to explore it!

I am headed out in July for the TAT and pops thinks I'm nuts.........I may have to send him your report and see if he gets it!

God Bless,
Jr

Jr,
Thank you and enjoy the TAT - it is on my list to do also!

Go to his club and let your Dad buy you lunch once a month. Enjoy the time with him doing anything together.

I try to spend any time I can with my kids, especially now that they have such active lives. I have fun watching my kids shop for motorcycles.

Thanks for the great report!
My gs is in the garage with the afterburner hanging down
So did your last leak go between the aluminum and steel part of the ring gear carrier?

PackRat found you're other report and the pics.
So how is the new modification holding up?

Yes...then I made a steel one to replace the aluminum spacer. I am now doing the experiments with the preload settings using an assortment of big bearing spacers from BMW...but I am doing it the old way...assemble, set torque, disassemble, measure with plastigage. Just like blueprinting an engine.

I will do a complete update on the "Final Drive from Hell" thread when I'm finished. The BMW procedure is supposed to be faster and seems to be designed as a more "dealer shop friendly" (spelled quicker) but it doesn't work out too well for most F/Ds. I agree with Anton that most factory preloads are set too tight.

I'm using the interior (on the bolt circle) mating surfaces of the case and lid as the reference points for my computations in four places (12, 3, 6, 9 o'clock at 1/4 inch from the bolt holes). That way I think I can more accurately set the preload (or "squeeze") on the bearing and crown gear assembly.

I'm too hard-headed to let a simple gearbox beat me!!

We are starting the test now with all new internals - bearings, seals, spacers and I'm going to measure each spacer clearance with plastigage, then start running the set up with about 25% of the BMW recommended preload and see how she survives. I'm trying to figure out if a borescope will allow me some macro shots between the ball bearings to watch the race surfaces. We'll keep you posted since I want it solved before my next long trip.

Final Drive update

The final drive has held up so far - we are at 40,000 now and since I dropped down a size in the preload spacers she seems to be doing well - checking it often though!

The spare is pre-packed with fluids & tools and ready for overnight to where ever it fails again....is that enough insurance to make sure it doesn't happen again? ..... yeah, I'm not holding my breath either!!
