F650gs Mileage
IIRC the F650gs version arrived on the scene in 2001 vs the Funduro previous
What I'd like to know is what type of mileage life can be expected of the F650 (single cylinder) motor if properly looked after

Might have a line on one with aprox 45,000 miles on it & would like an idea how long it will last before I make an offer on it. Luckily for me I know it's history & if the price is right, I'll add it to my Wee Strom so I can use it to "learn" some offroad/gravel skills

I have never heard that there was a problem with the engine in the F650 (single), then again I can't think of any modern vehicle that the engine life was unusually short. That's not to say that the water pump. fuel injection, electrics, brakes will last as long as the engine, but nothing lasts forever. I had a 2001 F650GS and rode 79,000+ miles without any problems. I did change tires a few times, the steering head bearings were replaced and I had to replace the brake pads, but that's what I consider normal maintenace. The engine did need the spark plugs replaced a few times also...

Dave92029 gave a good reply, but you may have the best success posing your question in the "Thumpers" thread since the F650 Singles are thumpers. Also, check the "Ride Reports" thread ... a lot of people have ridden their F650GS's around the world. ![]() Paul |

IIRC when I last saw piet boonstra he had 175k miles on his F650 (single cylinder, don't remember if it was a GS model). Then there's also a post here recently where one died a terrible death with relatively little mileage. I've never heard of a F650 or any moden engined motorcycle with a worn out engine. Most die from user-induced faults like riding without oil, crashing etc. The few that don't suffer such issues will generally last forever and there will always be a few with factory defects that will suffer an early death from catostrophic failure (like doo failer on the KLR or cracked pistions on the KLR...).

I know nothing lasts forever & I can't tell you how many times I've heard someone tell me I was going to wear my 04 Strom out by putting 44,000km on it in 2 summers
For that matter I sold a 96 VS1400 Intruder with over 130,000km on it to finance my move West & found out today it's just shy of 150k km as I was wondering if it was for sale yet. Higher mileage doesn't really bother me, but having an idea of what can be done if maintained properly is a bonus. As it is I know the pedigree of this particular 01 GS that I heard is once again for sale. I'm kicking myself for not buying it from my former lady friend when she sold it late summer 07. It was then sold within a month to it's current owner who has decided a cruiser (750 Shadow) would suit her needs better. My gravel skills are terrible & I hate the thought of destroying my 07 Strom learning how to ride off pavement. Figure if I get this I'll have a bike to loan friends when they come out to visit & I can flip my GIVI luggage between both machines for some "adventure rides" Quote:

I was thinking the request might be better answered in Thumpers, but wasn't sure, so I posted here

The best place for answers about anything to do with the F650 is F650.com. There you will be able to get maintenance CDs and answers to every imaginable question about all models of F650. There are folk over there with well over 100,000 miles on their F650.
