My grandfather fought with him. In his memoirs he refers to my grandpa Canturbury as "Cannonball".

Wonderful thread. I've been wanting to scan & upload this photo for a while.
Be kind.

This is me Mum. The photo is dated 1928, so that would put mom at age 17. My guess on the location is Euclid (Cleveland) Ohio. On the original scan, you can see "Harley Davidson" painted on the tank. I have no idea what model HD it is, or anything-- I relocated the photo this evening and I've not started a Web search of "HD History" yet.

So, here she is. Snappy dresser, huh?

It's in the blood, eh? Funny how that happens.

Hats off to Mum.

That is great. Thanks for posting it.

Something to be treasured I reckon. My grandfather was riding a Harley Davidson not long after that, but alas, no pictures. I've always wished I could discover what bike he rode.

Great picture of your mum, Bill! Love the old photo's of family members on motorcycles. Still looking through the pictures I have to see if any family members of mine are on motorcycles.

As it would happen, my mum gave me a book on H-D history she picked up at a resell-it shop recently. I took a peek at it just now to help you out on the history of the bike.

I am in no way a H-D expert but according to Harley Davidson Chronicle by Doug Mitchell, it looks like the bike your mum is riding is a 1931 Model 45. My reference shows a color picture of the same bike with the red color tank-fenders-chain guard, and the black & white splash logo on the tank (which looks like a bird) According to this book, the triangular tool box on the springer frame and single headlight begin identifing the 1931 model years. Here is a pic I found on the 'net, which is easier than trying to scan the pic I have in this hard bound book:

Linky to website info and more pics. Hope this helps you out with some background on that bike in the picture.

Touche'. A 1931 Model D it is. I looked online last night til I got googledy-eyed from looking at old motorbike pics and didn't find a match in the late 1920's Harleys. Engine, tank, paint, details like the triangular toolbox. I concluded that it was post-1927 (??) because of the front brake. So I decided thathe bike was customized or the photo was taken later than she thought. She looks a little older than 17 in the pic, and she probably put the date on the photo in the early 1980's, so memories were a bit hazy. Even though the paint color looks black, red is possible because many films of that era were somewhat blue-sensitive (=red-insensitive), which would render red as a dark blackish color.

I'll pop by the downtown library today and see what they have in HD books.

Sobering thought: when I bought my R60 in 1973, my mom was age 62, the same age I am now. Whew.
