(i've got aftermarket clutch for $20 or so but not brake?)

the dealer reckons (their) aftermarket supplier doesn't make 'em

and at $130 i could carve my own out of gold

the dollar is rubbish so the states is not an option

I'm pretty sure the aftermarket EXC brake levers are compatible.

I'd take the 990 to the shop and ask for a bunch of levers to swap and try on.

The twin disc font end on 990/950 and later 640 uses a different master cylinder and therefore a different leaver to the EXC and earlier 640. The main difference is the location of the brake light switch. An EXC leaver will work on a 990 etc but will not operate the brake light switch. Put the two leavers side by side and the difference is obvious. On the other hand, Ballards sell genuine Magura clutch leavers for about $25.00 and non-genuine ones are cheaper again. The moral of this story? always fall off on the left hand side
Paul.

Thumbs down

so the upshot is your 03 640 cheapie levers won't work KTM_Paul

i can't be effed riding 50km+ to a ktm dealer to be sold a $130 lever that i could have bought over the phone

and i checked the ballards catalogue and it looked like that no good either - which is what PrestonPaul is saying

i can probably get one of those fancy folding ASV levers shipped from the US with a shitty exchange rate and come out even

WTF

yep, the dreaded 9x0 brake lever cost issue. paul is on the money re the tab, i carry a set of plastic levers as spares and figure i can live with no brake light for the interim.

may i suggest you take time to loosen the mounts just a tad and thereby next time you most likely shall not be requiring a new lever.
