Thanks Bob. It still had the original gas in it from the dealer when I got it (guy bought it in Oct., rode it twice), needed to burn that out
I half expected the carb to have funk in it when I put the jet kit in, was happy to see it was spotless. Came with a low Sargent seat, I'm still thinking I may try to trade for a regular height, not sure. My knees are bent a little more than I like, advantage is that I sit more "in" the bike, stock windshield hits me about right instead of just under my chin with the standard height seat.

Randy - you know I was looking. All the DR's I saw seemed to be overpriced, thought about another weeStrom but saw this and, hey, it appeals to my sense of simplicity. Besides, since I've had three I sort of know how to work on them.

1st gear really comes into its own in the slow technical stuff.

^ This.

Starting in 2nd is going to shorten clutch life.

I dunno, I replaced the front sprocket on the DR200 with a +1 tooth front sprocket. For $25, It's made it incredibly more rideable with length of first gear, and increased the top speed a bit. Not sure that I would ever find myself needing that low of a first gear, it just hopped right up Stone Camp even with the +1 front sprocket.

Fast is fun, but it's all relative. You did a great job, man, no one went down in that slick snot. Advice from one of the best I've ridden with includes don't try to ride fast, shoot for smooth. Fast will follow...

That's cool at least someone got some pics. My cam I'd take riding died.

That low first (granny gear) is for things like hopping large logs without having to use the clutch when you need a secure grip on the bars. Other than that, I haven't ridden any technical stuff that would benefit from going so slow. Often, speed is your friend for getting through bumpy stuff, particularly when climbing. I hardly ever use first on these forest roads around here. I haven't tried yours but if it's as low as you describe, I'd probably take off in second if I was heading flat or downhill. I do that with my xrl when heading downhill and it doesn't have a particularly low first.

I was a bit in front of you guys yesterday am, didn't stop for many pix either but here's one taken about 10:30:

http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s...IMG_0001_6.jpg

That was a clean bike about 8 am, got a lot dirtier before I got home. I had to stop and clean my visor 4 times yesterday, don't even do that in bug season. Nasty stuff on the road.
I had a great first ride on the KLR (bought it "used" with 140 miiles on it), still breaking it in. I already installed the Eagle Mike KLX jet kit (huge improvement - nearly unrideable stock) and changed the oil once. Guess I'll order a doohickey soon.
Stopped at the 7-11 about 1:20 coming back from Brandywine (lunch at Fox's)/614/250/42 to shed a layer, must have just missed Blooch.
Guess I'll clean the bike some more today, salty crap is like glue. Nice 220 mile ride, hard to get those in January.
I was out that way working and saw you go by, then eventually saw your bike sitting at Fox's. Man I wish I could have gone riding instead of having to work.

Sorry to rub your nose in it when you're working! I couldn't pass up those temps to get in a long ride. Hope you get out soon.

KLR for sale...........

People,

My father is selling his KLR 650. At the present moment this is all I know.............
  • It is the year before they changed body styles
  • It runs perfect
  • Low miles
  • New parts
  • New tires
  • When he bought it, he had Casey Cycle City in Newport News go through and flush, service ,and tune the whole bike.
  • He is asking $3,000.00
  • The bike is in Newport New, VA
I'll try and get some pics and more info later...........
