There are phone numbers on this page for the Potomac District Ranger Station and the company that runs the campgrounds.

The Ranger Station might be closed.

Let us know what you find out.

If they're closed I would imagine you can still camp in the many primitive sites scattered about the NF, you'll just have to do what the bears do.

Called the management company and the Campgrounds are still open

But I still might do what the bears do, just for fun

Sounds like you had a good day.
Well... do you believe me now about Union Springs being as rocky as ever?
Your words do it justice.

I don't know about low first gear going through there though. At least that wouldn't work for me on my bike. If I had to stop in that mess I'd probably drop the bike. My legs are barely long enough to touch the ground on the flat and smooth - if my foot goes into a dip, the bike ends up on top of me. So I do my best to keep rolling through there in second, and I wouldn't characterize my first gear as "low" but it seems borderline slow for my safe ascent. I go slower down than up...

The other day I told my wife I'd be home by the time she would be, and ended up talking to a guy at the gas station when I noticed his back tire was going flat, then his truck then wouldn't start. About that time, Kshow pulled in on his GS1100 and quickly offered to run home, grab his car for a jumpstart, and brought back a tire plugging kit - he fixed his tire, jumped his car, aired him up and got him back on the road. By the time I got home afterward, I heard about how she was worried, I should have called, how inconsiderate I was, and she was right... I should have called. It's just that we lose track of time and think we'll be heading on at any moment. I need to learn to be more cognizant of the time.

So, it looks like from the picture you got through the gate and up to the construction site. Did you not continue on? When that happened to me, I just rolled on by the construction crew, waved, and headed out the other gate. I figure if the gate's open, the road's open. And it was... (for a bike)

Tim, you make me miss my XT. It was such a fun little bike for stuff like Union. Light weight, but powerful enough to get up the hills. It would touch 70 on pavement, but didn't seem to like it. Enjoy that thing. It is a hoot.

She was right. I should have called. And she wasn't too pissy, just a little upset. Its all good now. The gate was open and I drove right up to the construction crew. They were laying concrete forms down in the HUGE ditch. I asked them about the gate on the other (towards WV) and they said it was a closed cattle gate and pretty steep on both sides. They had a little dirt path across the ditch so I could have got through but I decided to take their advise on the other gate. I just came back to where the road Y's and heads over to Todd Lake. Then down Dry River Rd to Union Springs. Up Union, down FlagPole, up to Reddish Knob, down to Kevin's, and then over to a buddies house.

That low first gear was nice for getting back moving when I took a few naps on the steep shit on Union. The weather was awesome yesterday and I had worked up a good sweat by the time I got to the top.

On a side note.... The only thing I saw closed due to the gov't was Todd Lake.

I went for a little bike-a-hike to a pretty cool spot today. Thought you may be interested in reading about it!
