Ron, I hadn't seen any posts (here anyway) since you put the paper filter back in.... Am I correct in reading that you built a new filter frame from a used paper filter (using the screen from Cajun) and are now running foam? That's awesome.

Yes matt, running foam's now, its great

Red uni first and then one black one, both very lightly oiled, bike runs great! It seems to run very good with just one black foam as well, but i put the red in there, to catch the bigger stuff first, sort of like a prefilter.

You ever take more pics of the KLR?

haha, yeah I've got one or two more recent ones. I just got my seat concepts seat installed, so it's finally all black now. I will probably take the seat to pull "fixed" by a local shop, I just can't seem to work out the last 2 wrinkles. I had the same problem on the XT. When I do, I'll be sure to take several "complete" pics and let you know.

Matt, I just got back from Manchester TN. How far is that from you in Clarksville? I keep hearing there are a lot of good riding near cumberland gap in Tn. My parents just moved to Tn and my brother lives in Nashville so I go up there every so often and always think about trailering my bike up to do some riding. Just wondering how much good riding there is around and if you have tracks if so.

Hey Man, Clarksville is about 3 hours north of Manchester. I myself haven't ridden (well, I have, but street only) that far south, but plenty of guys from the Nashville area make their way down to that region regularly, lots of good riding, but lots of CRAZY technical riding in areas prone to flash flooding.

I've not looking in a while, but check out dualsportmaps.com, there are possibly some tracks down that way on the site. I have uploaded a number of tracks that are Northwest of Nashville to the site as well. I work in Nashville and live about an hour northwest. There is not very much riding around my homearea, I have to leave the county to find any dirt at all. I'm not a technical rider, so I usually make my way out into the counties west of Nashville and hit up dirt roads and forest areas. I hope to ride in East Tennessee some more this year, did pavement only out that way last fall and had a blast, but I want to explore some of the dirt out that way now.

Xt250 Speedo vs. GPS Actual Top end speed

Has anyone checked out the difference between actual and indicated speed on the xt250?

Before my change to wider higher profile tires, the speedo indicated a top speed of about 78MPH. After I changed to the new tires, The top indictated speed is about 72Mph. I finally decided to check indicated vs. Actual (GPS measure) and with the new tires, at indicated 72Mph, the GPS read is 70Mph.

I am guessing that the Indicated with stock tires was way off, by about 8MPH on the high side and that the new tires
brought the Speedo closer to reality..

So..
Top Speed is 72MPH indicated vs 70MPH on GPS with new tires..
Front 90/90/ 21"
Rear 130/90 18"

I'm wondering what actual is vs indicated in stock (or similar) form...

Thanks.. Foamy

Bike looks great matt!!

Foamy, that is good to know, are you running the stock gears too?

And what tires do you have on there, with stock gearing ive gotten as high as 84mph indicated, that was the most it did, engine was screaming, and there was no headwind at all, it was maybe just a bit of a slight downhill slope, not much, was almost straight.

With the 16t front sprocket, most i ever got was around 79-80 indicated, and to me personally, it feels that 75mph with the 16 is faster then 75mph with the stock 15 front, some say the speedo is off by as much as 10% percent.

Thanks Ron.

I don't remember the exact speeds, but with the stockers and the stock size SR244 tires on my xt250, I was right about 8% slower than indicated per my GPS.

I took the bike trail riding yesterday, at my local spot (Rowher Flats, http://www.riderplanet-usa.com/atv/t.../ride_6350.htm ), Fealt a bit brave , so i hit this long 4+ miles of black diamond trail, its basically a huge climb, stock gearing, bike ran GREAT, but man, it could not DO IT in 2nd gear at all, not enough power, so the whole time i was climbing in first gear, bike was screaming, it got the hottest ive ever seen it get, about 465 degrees, ( trail tech temperature meter), seems the hotter it got, the less power it was producing, still, the bike made it up there like a champ , some parts were so steep, that i could not grip, the shinko's are a pretty good dual sport tire, but not as good as a knobby tire, still made it all the way up, slowly but surely,

Im just amazed at what ive been able to do on this bike, for a 16 HP bike, both off road and on the streets, not my vid, but this is the climb i did yesterday, looks simple in the vid, but in real life, its got parts that are so steep, that if you stall, even with both the front brakes and rear brakes on, the bike will still slide back slowly, cant stop, gotta keep the momentum going

New 2012 XT 250 FI on the way

I went to the local Hong Kong Yami dealer and was all stoked to get the golden-wheeled 2012 XT 250 with FI. Unfortunately, I have to wait 3-4 weeks for some stupid emissions testing since the thing is like right out of the box. I already ordered the factory bash plate which I can get here for $50 cheaper than in the states. Here come the questions:

1) Any overheating issues? I suspect not or the engineers would've put a small oil cooler somewhere.
2) IS the FMF Powercore 4 worth the upgrade other than the better sound? 1-2 more HP and 1-2 less pounds is always
a good thing in my book. Does the FMF come with an O2 sensor in the US?
3) Already looking for handlebar upgrade to go with a set of barkbusters. Which Protaper bar closely resembles the stock
dimensions but have maybe 1 cm more "rise" to them?

Thanks for the tips, gents!

Let the good time roll!

Congrats, that is great news, cant wait to see some pics or some vids of the new FI model.

!, no overheating issues for me ever, and i have a trail tech temperature meter on the spark plug and the oil, i do use full synthetic oil tho, because its said to help keep temps down.

2. The FMF is definately worth it, power increase, about 7 pounds weight savings, no 02 sensor in the US model, it is louder tho, but definately worth it imo.

3. stock handlebars are great, instead of replacing, you can just get these 2 items and be done

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Tusk-Handleb...#ht_1274wt_952

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Cycra-Proben...646fb6&vxp=mtr

Thats my set up, has been working great.

Thanks, 150 ron. I love the temperature gauge concept. Where does it connect to the bike for the oil temperature reading?

Also, does the stock handlebar have inserts that need to be drilled out? I had to do that on my KLX 250 and it was a PITA.

Also, the steel bars bend if you drop them hard enough (I learned this the hard way), so going with a new bar for $50-$60 is

probably worth it for insurance against breakage, and ease of hand guard installation.

Cheers,

The stock bars did not have inserts, you do have to cut the plastic end on the throttle side tho, and then the hand guards just slide in, ive dropped mine about 10 times now allready , and the stockers have been taking the abuse fine, but a stronger set would be a good thing to upgrade to.

Heres a few pics i snapped for you, here are both the temperature meters mounted on my handguards, where they are safe and easy to view, the left one is for the spark plug, and will usually be between 350-430 once the bike is warmed up, and the one on the right i got on the line that sends the oil to the top of the cylinder, that one will be about 220-250 in regular riding conditions, they are both different tho, i traffic lights, the one around the spark plug will go DOWN IN TEMPS, while in traffic lights the one in the oil line will GO UP IN TEMPS.

and you can see the wires coming out from the spark plug and the oil line on the bottom, those are the meter wires.

I just ordered the coleman/stearns atv seat cover from amazon, hear lots of good things, will try it out.

not my bike, but this is the cover on a 250
