Do it CJ! You are already close to there compared to us north americans. Just a quick blip across Pakistan- cross into Iran near Quetta so you skip Afganistan and into Turkmenistan near Mashad at Mary. Best riding there is! (not TM but the other 'stans").

Any particular reason to avoid Afganistan. Apart from that you wanted to ride in Russia :)

Edit: Got the answer. Read the entire thread again.

Can you share roads routes?

Wow. Just incredible. I'll probably re-read this thread over and over.

Truly inspirational in so many ways.

Iranian friendlyness

I'll post some more pics later (they're on the other pc), so for now just an Iranian anecdote.

I went from Esfahan to Yazd, a days ride. Yazd is an ancient town; it is said one of the oldest in the world. The center consists of mud-brick houses and narrow alleys. The ancient buildings contain naturally operating 'air conditioning'. It's really a beautiful place to spend some time.

As I rode along the outskirts of town, as always, I caught a lot of attention.

I should explain something here: attention-getting. In Iran bikes are (by law) max. 200cc. So if you arrive with a 750, everyone stares at you & the bike ..

I must have seemed lost, as a car pulled out in front of me and a hand waved out the window, beckoning me to follow. Not having a cue which way to go, I decided to follow the car.

After following for 10-15min we came to an intersection and the hand gestured me to go left. After turning left, I saw that I we had reached the center of town. A couple of hundred meters further I found the (famous) Silk Road Hotel.

Iranian joke

Before I tell the joke, I need to explain something.

As you know, for many years, Iran and Iraq were involved in a terrible, bloody war. During the war many Iranians died or became wounded. These people are known as 'martyrs'.

When you enter a town in Iran, you'll often see banners and flags proudly displaying the faces of the martyrs.

The martyrs that became wounded and disabled were assigned a 'martyr percentage.' The percentage would depend on the severity of the disability.

For example, losing a hand might make you a 15% martyr and losing an arm a 25% martyr. The martyr-percentage determines how much disability payment the martyr receives.

Now for the joke ..

An old woman is doing her daily shopping in Theran when suddenly, she sees a penis following her. Distressed, she speeds up, trying to get away. The penis speeds up as well and continues to follow her. No matter what she tries, she can't get rid of the following penis.

The woman sees a shop across the street and runs to it. Entering the shop she yells: 'Help me please, A penis is trying to attack me!'. The shopkeeper looks at the penis and then says to the woman: 'Show some respect lady! That's a 99% martyr!'
