Site speed and upgrades

Yo. ADV is slowly bogging again as its size outstrips the hardware that powers its database. I've been reluctant to upgrade to a more recent version of the software that we use for fear the extra features will be resource hogs.

A few years ago we solved this by putting in what seemed at the time to be the mother of all database servers, at least as far as forums are concerned.

We've been holding out for the new flash-based servers (as opposed to hard disk-based) from Sun to arrive, so I can buy (ouch, $$$) one and solve all our problems. Then it will all be happy happy joy joy and everyone in Jo Momma will live happily ever after with love and kisses for all.

I dunno, maybe a couple 'o months?

Yep, gotta agree. Don't think I qualify as an inmate yet, lacking 1) a dirt/dual-purpose bike; 2) I've yet to meet any of y'all; 3) I'm terminally n00b. I think I'll wander down to the "Donate" button and send a check up to Mountain View.

Thanks for running a great site. I didn't notice it was slow...but then it's relative to expectations. Everything is slow here.

Love the site, it's brought me sanity, friends and insight.

I love me some ADV.

Paypal standing by (having to cool it a bit...)

.. as a veteren of an ISP "I feel your pain". WHen we started in 1995, our growth rate was so high that we outgrew our servers and software at alarming rates... change is never a good thing on a large server.. not a fun prospect to think of what it would take to change this beast over.. I think I'd rather go clean my chain.. with my mouth.

btw.. I dont; see a DONATE button anywhere on any of the pages I access?? I was given the link a week or so ago and did manage to make a $contribution$... If I don;t see it, and it is supposed to be there.. who else doesn;t see it???

anywho.. I will think positive flash thoughts and send happy Sun thought beams to you!

When using the "raabia" skin, the DONATE links do not show!

I KNEW there had to be a good answer!!

Why not put some goofball mod to good use creating a "server fund thread" etc, I'll throw in a few bucks. What about an auction of sorts, we all have extra goodies we could sell.

Yeah, I think if you can come up with a cost estimate or price quote, post it, and a paypal method of donation, inmates would be willing to help defray cost. A running total online of amount donated would be a good motivator to help with the cause.

Thanks for your efforts.

Oops., I see that this (donation part) has been done...what about just posting what the true cost and need really is, too?

Can someone sticky a Toxic Server thread in JoMomma for this, so it will be seen?

The boss is not pimpin' for money. He never asks.

If someone wants to post something about this in JM, do it. If it has merit, folks will pony up.
