276C, something to watch for...

First of all, instead of repeating everything that's already been said in other related threads, I'll just say that the 276c rocks even harder than I thought it would after reading said threads. I'm seriously thrilled to have bought one. It's a huge leap forward.

OK, now for the cautionary note to 276c owners: Be careful when pulling the power/data plug out from the back of the unit. Seems that the seal is positive enough to hang onto the tip of the lead, pulling it apart from the charger/power cord.

Using the following picture, borrowed from Too Many Toys, imagine everything below the ridge on the power plug (that's seated against the 276c's body) wanting to stay in the unit when the lead gets unplugged...

Borrowing another picture, from Fred H., this shows the end that can pop off the lead...

I was able to carefully reassemble mine, but it came at the expense of one of the plug's four perimeter contacts. Everything still works and as usual, the Garmin support guy was more than accommodating. They're sending me a new wall charging unit along with a complimentary speaker/power cigarette lighter widget for the car - no questions asked. I plan to use a few drops of super glue on the power leads to help keep things in check.

Did I mention that the 276C rocks?

Hey Arch - If you don't mind me asking - Where did you get yours, what options were needed and how much? Thanks

$609 from gpsdiscount.com. A Froogle search turns up a couple for a few bucks less, but GPSdiscount actually had 'em in stock and have always been a pleasure to deal with. As far as extras go, I had 'em send an extra bare power cord and am using my existing Garmin data cards, so I didn't need anything else. When the 256 card debuts, I'll buy one of those and sell a 128, probably as a package deal along with my trusty old StreetPilot III & TT mount.

Right now it's on the marine mount that comes with it, an easy install on my truck's steering column. I took the power lead and wired in under the dash to an "always-on" source. For use on the GS I'm gonna get another marine mount, attach it to the handlebar using RAM stuff, and wire it in always-on using the other power lead.

Hey Arch,

You guys are killing me here. I just ordered one from GPSdiscount.com (excellent service). I hope it's "all that"...

Not to worry, Marc, you'll be blown away. We were playing with it tonight and here's an example of its brain power. Our rides out in the desert mountains of far west Texas are based out of a cabin that's well off the beaten path in a maze of dirt roads. From our house to there it's like 700 miles. I've uploaded all of old waypoints into the 276c, so I tell it to route me from home to the cabin...

And it's done in like three seconds.

WOO HOO! I called gpsdiscounts last night, and they squeezed my order into the fedex shipment last minute. Kudos to them. Should have it in my hands by Friday. Also ordered the data card and cityselect v5.

Man am I pumped to get rid of that E(paperweight)Map.

Can you switch the track feature off? It looks like it runs continually meaning you'd have to delete the tracks you don't want to save as you go.

I haven't used all of my track memory yet, but its set to overwrite the oldest data when it fills up. Haven't actually seen it do that yet.

In my GPSmap 176 I cannot change the track record mode if the unit is running the Simulator.
Perhaps the 276 is the same ?

Maybe that's the problem, I haven't played with it in real time yet.

I know it's configurable how often it drops a crumb in track mode. I'd assume you could either turn it off, or set it to drop a crumb infrequently.

Yep, outside of simulator mode, hit Menu twice and click down to Track on the left, then over to Record Mode to the right.
