Very cool report, and now I am addicted to the 28days site.

Here are a few shots of part of an abandoned Nike missle site, the launch area is now Krome detention center. (Charlie Battery)

Looking to wiki the site I found that they opened the one in Flamingo park in the Everglades for tours. I'll have to get there soon.

Here are a couple of shots of the Krome control center, it gets used for paintballing and obviously other "activities."
Was there alone, never removed my helmet.

Ride reports like these are what make this site the great place that it is
keep them coming.
I wish I had pics from when I was a kid, my dad worked at an old Nike site outside Cleveland (the missles were gone by the 70's) and my brother and I would explore the abandoned buildings when we were there. At that time the silo's had already been filled and where a city park but Army was still using some of the other buildings for storage and a National Guard unit.

My ex wife had a lot of family who worked at the Dawson Forest site during its operational days. Sadly, most have passed away from cancer. Her Uncle worked the rail cars; loading, moving and unloading.
Based on my previous occupation with the DoD; I would not recommend consuming anything from that area.
It really is a cool place to check out. I used to ride there a lot in the late eightes and early nineties while living just a couple of miles away.
I still use it as a cut through heading towards Amicalola Falls and the Nimblewill area on my rides.
Great write up Flux.

Finally got up to look at this today. I think this is actually a lid for the hot cell building. Thanks for the history lesson. The wife and I enjoyed knowing what we were looking at.

Great to see this thread still going! Thanks all for the contributions, I was hoping for some of that. I know adding your own pics to someone else's Ride Report here on ADV is a big no-no in most but I was happy to see it here.

I just rode through again this weekend to show my father in law... the water crossing at Shoal Creek was deeper than usual I thought. Sometime I need to take a pic of myself crossing it... it's depth is deceiving.

Got a few new pics this week I wanted to share here. Cutting through the forest is a great "shortcut" to get me down to Cumming. It's kinda my alternate to Hwy 9 sometimes.

My father worked there. He died when I was 18 from multiple myloma. Cancer does not run in my family.

We have always suspected that he got a dose of radiation from there.

I hope the people who ran that place rot in hell.

Yo Stretch, how ya been? Haven't "seen" you around much lately!

6' Catfish, sorry also to hear about your dad. You are not the first person to mention this sort of thing to me. To be honest (and I am not one to suggest this sort of thing all the time... actually... I think it's a big part of what's wrong with this country...) but I am surprised there has never been any sort of class action lawsuit over it. Unbelievable actually.

Debandi, thanks for the kind words. You know I strive to make them as good as your reports though!

Thanks for the words, BikePilot. As far as who to sue? I have zero experience thankfully with such things but I might start with Lockheed, for one. Like I said, I am not really for such things, but sometimes ya just have to wonder who knew what and who was putting who in danger for who. Or something like that.
